The OTHER Girls

I know you are all dying to know how the chicks have done since I’ve been gone, right? 😉 Well, I’m happy to say that our parents have been doing a fantastic job of keeping our flock happy and healthy! They moved into the coop not long after I landed in Albuquerque, and they’ve been enjoying that home They have a little “run” outside where they like to be, but as of yet are not totally “free range.” Speaking of, they don’t seem to be making much headway with the ants that I see crawling through their space. One of the biggest reasons I wanted chickens around here was to help control the ant population. Of course, there are SO many ants that maybe they do eat their fill and there are still some to spare… hmmmmm.

Anyway, all 12 are still here looking good. The Barred Rock pullets are the biggest and the Leghorns are the smallest. They are all very lovely birds. (Never thought I’d think of chickens as pretty, but really they are!) They don’t love to be handled, but are gentle when the kids do manage to catch them. They’re not skittish as long as you’re not trying to touch them. 🙂 Since I’ve been back they’ve attempted to eat my prettily polished toe nails AND my diamond ring! I didn’t mind the toe thing, but I’m not interested in letting them peck at my diamond! Uh-uh!

So there you have it. A brief update. I think we may try in the next few weeks to let them wander a bit more. We need to introduce them to the dog in a way that he understands they are NOT to be messed with. And then I think all will be well.
