Back Talk

2011
10.11

Back talk is a problem in our house with the lads. It’s become almost second nature to them these days. I know, hard to believe such amazing little people can have such sinful natures, isn’t it? :) It’s one of those things, just about even with whining that sets my blood boiling. Arg! No one likes back talky kids. Everyone has seen parents somewhere struggling with a kid who has a disrespectful mouth.

So we have been working on this struggle for them. I can’t say I’ve had any enormous break throughs recently except that my own reaction/response needs working on first of all. I recently “attended” a webinar by this lady who hosts Positive Parenting Solutions. It’s a psychology based approach to parenting, and while, I’m sure there are things tucked in there that I wouldn’t necessarily agree with, but at the same time there is a lot of good stuff. Stuff that I have read from time to time in the Christian parenting books I have gone through. And sometimes it’s nice to have some resource to look at that gives you a slightly different approach. I’ve had a few… more than a few days recently where I’ve felt completely defeated and ineffective as a parent. I go to bed thinking the entire day or even week has been a complete failure where my input in raising our kids is concerned.

The webinar gave me a few things to think about with consequences, and maybe I’ll share those on here sometime soon too, because it made sense to me. Also something that has been hitting home a lot for me is the “one on one” time with the kids. I really do think that I’d see a big change in the monkeys if I would purposely give them more one on one time. It’s easier with Qade now that he has school that I help him with, but I need to carve out time for each of them every day and make it a positive time. That can be difficult on days where they are jumping on my buttons, and they know how to do it too! :) It feels like the last thing I want to do is sit down and cuddle, or tickle or play trains. But it’s so important that I do.

Anyway, here’s an article by the gal I mentioned with the webinar…. sorry I don’t remember her name, and I’m too lazy to look it up right now, but it’s a good article about back talk and how to deal with it. I’m going to read it again, and start implementing some of the steps right away. :) I’ll let ya know how it goes.

Kids and grass, and a healthy dose of dirt

2011

Our grass has been slowly coming back. The poor stuff really has to fight for it’s life out here. First off… we don’t live in an area that’s really hospitable to nice fluffy, easy on your feet, green grass. Think trying to grow grass in a sand box…. or on the beach, but not that wet. :) But Stu has been working with this stuff all spring and summer. He has seeded it a couple of times, uh… the birds I like to feed might have something to do with some of the seed disappearing… and the ants too. :) And he has faithfully watered it and mowed it all summer. Not to mention cutting back the tree “sprouts” that spring up all over the yard and are very tenacious!

His hard work really has payed off though, because the grass is much thicker than it was and it is even growing back in the bald patches. The kids now like to play on it, and I’ve let Ella crawl around out there from time to time now that it’s cooler and there aren’t as many bugs. The one drawback to this great grass is that these horrible wasps called (from what Google tells me) Tarantula Hawks like to crawl around IN the grass. They are HUGE and black and have rusty orange wings that make a terrible sound when they fly. And from what I’ve read, while they aren’t aggressive, they have one of the worst stings EVER. *sigh* So I have been reluctant to let Ella just crawl to her heart’s content on the grass for fear she’d crawl over one of these. Though why they like to hang out in the grass is beyond me.

But I check the grass patch thoroughly and then let her go. The boys know enough to stay well away from the wasps and they come running to tell us if they spot one. We spray them when we get a chance. Ick. Grass is so fun! And if it’s not grass, it’s dirt, so de Bella gets grass. ;)

Myles prefers dirt, however. And can be seen merrily tossing all over his head at any given time of day. :)

Qade likes to inform me of the particulars of the latest bug that he has discovered.

Seriously, he finds the weirdest things. The other day he came running in to tell me about a BIG green caterpillar that he found. So we all rushed out to see it and sure enough it was the biggest caterpillar I’ve ever seen. I looked it up on trusty ol’ Google and it told me that the name of it was Horned Tomato Worm. Strange…. we haven’t seen any tomato plants around here.

Gazing at the big blue sky!

Myles’ only purpose when he gets on this swing is to reach out and grab the branches on the tree. :) He gets a huge kick out of it when he does, and gets rather upset if for some reason “it’s not working” to get him high enough. :)

We have fun outside in our yard. I admit that the bugs that seemed more numerous than ever this summer, have kept me from spending as much time out there as I want. But the boys have enjoyed the space immensely! I’m looking forward to the death of the bugs with the cooler Fall weather and spending some of the golden afternoons out on our grass! :)

Fun in a box

This is the box that Ella’s car seat came in. Yes, they are in there.
DSC_2351

It’s just the perfect size for 2 rather rambunctious monkeys. They thrashed about in it in the house for a little while, and then Mommy had a stroke of brilliance and tossed it, and them out into the yard. ;) Kidding… they walked out. ;)

But they ended up having so much fun in their box on the grass that I had to go join them. Not in the box. Not on the grass either. But I sat in a lawn chair and snapped some fun pictures of them just being lads.

These grins are irresistible, but you just know that lurking behind them are boys full of boyness. :)

Here’s how these box things work…

First you rock forward,

then you rock back,

rock forward again…

then back again….

…. and forward again.

Till you’re all worn out and then you crash in a heap in the bottom of the box.

Got it?

Good.

De Bella’s Birthday

2011
10.05

We had a lot of fun with our easy-does-it birthday party for Ella. Some of our friends got to come over for it, and the kids all had a blast, and the grown ups did too. :)

Here is the birthday face.
DSC_2178

Oops, I mean HERE is the birthday face. :)
DSC_2185

She loved that balloon! I always try to get a mylar for the kids on their birthdays. They love them as much as the gifts, I think.

Some of the other party participants. We used plates that were left over from Ella’s baby shower! :) That’s kinda cool.
DSC_2184

Ella’s cake pops were a hit! The boys especially loved them, and they polished off the “left overs” with no trouble in the next couple of days. :)
DSC_2182

Here’s Ella investigating hers. Do you think she managed to take a bite?
DSC_2196

She’s telling me how amazing she thinks they are and what a great job dipping and sprinkling them I did. ;)
DSC_2207

I know this photo is fuzzy, but this is as close as she got to putting it in her mouth on her own. :) I eventually snuck in a couple bits for her to taste, but she enjoyed holding her birthday cake pop. Don’t worry, we’re planning a “cake smash” for her birthday pictures next week sometime. :)
DSC_2201

Now it’s time to check out the loot!
DSC_2212

Yay, a Giraffe toy! This one is so fun! I’ve played with it more than she has. I will simply cry buckets when Ella tells me she’s not that into giraffes. ;)
DSC_2216

Playing with Kathryn, or actually snitching her little fuzzy worm, was more fun to Ella than opening gifts. :)

The party was a success, and regardless of my own fond wishes, the Lass has indeed turned one. :) :( Such mixed emotions I have with this gal! Ha ha!! We had a great time, and thank you to everyone who gave Ella a gift and also thanks for contributing to her car seat. It’s awesome!

Don’t judge me

A big scary, and smelly I might add, monster lurked around my house all last week. I didn’t mean for it to happen, but we got to Friday, and every stitch of the lads’ clothing was dirty, and much of the rest of our stuff was as well. *sigh* This was only part of the mayhem! But it all got done and put neatly away, just in time for a new monster to begin lurking. ;)

Autumn

2011
10.03

It’s inevitable I suppose…

Fall is here to stay, at least for a little while. :) I’m disappointed that I’m not excited about it actually. Autumn has always been my favorite, but this year I feel differently. I still don’t feel like I sufficiently thawed out this summer. I need to soak more sun into my bones before they start to freeze again! But the truth is, I wore a big sweat shirt most of the summer as well. I just can’t seem to get/stay warm!

But the other day, I tried my hand at making “apple chips” in my oven, and while it turned out a dismal failure, the apple cinnamony smell that was wafting through the house was lovely, and very distinctly a Fall smell. :) That kind of helped me with my “mood” a little bit, and at least resigned me to the fact that Autumn is indeed here. I think that once it truly cools off a bit more, and we can build a warming fire in the mornings, I’ll be more pleased. :) I’ve actually been longing for a good crackling wood fire for awhile!! Nothing makes me feel more warm and toasty…. except maybe staying snuggled under the covers when I should be up already. ;) Ha!

I’ve been trying to prepare for the cooler weather by stocking up on some layering tank tops. I have to dress in layers in the winter. Even in the bulkiest sweaters I can find I’ll freeze if there isn’t more than one layer. :) So I found some on sale on Amazon, and I came across some at Costco too. I have a hard time finding them long enough and without that silly “shelf” that I can’t stand. :) But now I believe I’m all set with those. I still need to get some tights, because same goes with thick pants… they need help. And some good warm socks. All of mine are developing holes at the same time, sadly. I’m already very thankful for the warm lined Crocs that I scored over the summer!! I’ve been wearing them around the house and they keep my tootsies toasty. I love the new tile floor in our kitchen, but it IS very cold to walk or stand on. :)

So it’s come. School is in swing. Colors are bursting out everywhere. I was thinking yesterday as I drove home that in Autumn even the WEEDS start to look amazing. Really, the colors just can’t be beat! Cooler temps are being welcomed, by most. And today I am listening to Christmas music, and burning a “christmas tree” smelling tart in the house. If that doesn’t do it for me, pretty much nothing will. ;)

Enjoy Autumn!!
