School Days

This post is so late in coming, but I’m behind in everything right now…. oh well. Preschool has commenced. :) Qade is pretty excited about the whole concept. The other weekend when we were visiting my parents, he asked my mom why he couldn’t read, and she told him that he needed to learn all of his letters first. So since then he’s been pretty intent on learning his letters because he really wants to read. :)

We are doing a very simple school this year. I had given some thought to ordering the media that goes along with the Answers In Genesis curriculum, but after thinking it through, I realized that I really don’t want to make this preschool year THAT structured. My basic goals are to teach him the content of the alphabet, his numbers 1-20 and scripture memory. I’m not going to delve too deeply into the social studies parts, or PE, or whatever. We get plenty of PE out here anyway. ;) I want him to start learning how to focus his attention on tasks and follow directions.

So far he is doing fantastic. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how well he has applied himself to tracing. The child is OCD like his Dad, so I shouldn’t be amazed, but he get’s so intent on drawing exactly on the lines that I have to be careful not to laugh. :) A couple of times he has drooled on the table because he’s so into it that he forgets to swallow. LOL!! Last year he couldn’t care less about lines or tracing at all, so I realize now there there is a definite readiness factor involved. He is recognizing capital letters fantastically, not so much the lower case yet, but it’ll come.

Myles enjoys school too. He gets to do “worksheets” which are really coloring book pages. He participates with gusto in any art project as well. Today he “colored” his worksheet and then got to practice cutting. He would make one little slice with the scissors, set them down, and proceed to rip that piece off. It was a grand success. ;) He also loves to do gluing! He’d probably sit there all afternoon with the glue stick if I would let him.

Myles sits in on our Bible story, and is learning the verses with us. Both boys also do the “days of the week” song that we are learning. They both also get to participate in moving the magnet on our calendar and crossing out the “used” days. That’s probably the funnest thing to do in this house! Seriously!

Along with school I have instituted “responsibility time.” I dislike the word chores, so in our house we have responsibilities. The boys think it’s great! I have an envelope and a sticker chart for each lad. After breakfast each day, I lay the cards with pictures of each responsibility on them on the table. They get to put them in the envelope as they finish each one. Once they are all done, they get a sticker. I think their favorite to do so far are feeding the cat and dog (oh you should see the picture I drew for that one, ha ha ha!!! You’d think that there would be a graphic for that!) and brushing their teeth by themselves. They LOVE brushing their teeth with no help. Qade even puts the toothpaste on, and he has finally started to use his spinning toothbrush. He wouldn’t let us get close to him with it before, but now he loves it! Ha!

So there you have it. It’s still not sinking in that we’re facing the school years and that homeschooling has actually begun, but all in all I think we are off to a good start. :)

Ella’s 11 Month Shoot

2011
09.15

I finally got Ella into the studio for her 11 month shoot. Nevermind that her first b-day is next Wednesday. (WHAAAAAAAAAA!!!) But we had a little fun together getting some sweet pictures. Of course the day before she managed to pull her brother’s booster seat at the table over top of her, and scraped her face, but with a little brilliant editing you’ll never know. ;) Some of these shots gave me a real vintage, old fashoned-y feeling. See if they strike you that way. Here’s my biggest little girl. So much a baby, so much a big girl.

Just she and her pals.

Saw this on pinterest and knew I wanted one like this. Ella is my little velcro child these days, so she’s often trying to climb my legs. Good memories to keep….

Cream of “something”

2011
09.09

Ever since I watched an episode (well part of it… I missed the end where the recipe was, of course) of a “Good Eats” program on the food network about casseroles and how terrible it is to use condensed “cream of whatever” soup in them, I’ve hated using them in my cooking. But I still do…

I just can’t get over the “convenience” of it. Ha! And since I didn’t see the end of the show, I don’t know what he used instead. I don’t used creamed soups a lot, but there are dishes that I use it for. The easy potato soup I love! Over slow-cooked beef roast! And, of course, the various and sundry casseroles. I don’t make casseroles very much, but I came across a couple recipes recently that I think I’d like to try.

Anyway, all of that to say that the other day while browsing on pinterest, I discovered a recipe for “Cream of Something Soup Mix.” Wow! I decided right away to make some, and since I was going to the store the next day, I got what I needed. I actually had most of the ingredients on hand so it all worked out well. I made a double batch of the mix, because I figure if you’re going to make a mess, you might as well have 2x as long before you have to do it again! ;) It’s really not a messy recipe, but I make anything that’s kinda powdery a mess, unfortunately.

The mix smells yummy, and I’m pretty interested to see how it works! I’m a little doubtful of how it will do in the potato soup, because I like to use cream of celery in it. Maybe if I add some finely cut fresh celery or some celery salt it’ll still have the flavor. :) But for casseroles I think this mix is going to be perfect! I’m so thrilled!! Even if I didn’t get all the advice from Alton Brown, I still managed to find an “unprocessed” way of making the ingredients I need. Oh, and this is supposed to be much cheaper than buying condensed soups as well. Always a nice perk!

So in case you’ve decided to give it a go as well, here’s the recipe! Let me know if you use it and your “verdict.” :)

Cream of “something” soup recipe
1 cup non-fat dried milk
3/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup bouillon cubes
4 Tablespoons freeze dried minced onions
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried thyme (I couldn’t find the thyme so I used dried parsley instead)
1 teaspoon pepper
(For the equivalent of one can of condensed cream soup, mix 1/3 cup dry mix with 1 1/4 cup water. Cook until thick)

School and other procrastinations

I’ve been telling myself for quite some time that we’d start “school” the day after Labor Day, tradition ya know. Well, Labor day came and went and Tuesday morning I realized that I was NOT ready for school… mostly because I had done NO prep or planning. Duh!! I’ve mentioned before that I’m a reluctant Homeschool Mom, but I know I have to do it and just need to well… do it! :)

So this week I hunkered down and started plotting and planning. Now I believe I’m ready (except for the supplies I need to pick up at the store today) for school to start on Monday. :) Qade is happy and excited about it. I’ll be letting Myles participate as much as possible, but also having some one-on-one with Qade. It’s going to be a challenge, but I think we’ll all end up enjoying it.

I’ll be getting some posters for scripture memory cards and sticker charts for verses and “responsibilities.” That’s what we’re calling our morning “chores.” I have little chore cards for both of them, and we will be competing those together each morning. But I don’t really like the word chore, so we’re going to call them responsibilities. :) Nice, huh? Ha ha!

I’m going to Zumba tonight. We switched this week to accommodate some other plans. I’m really enjoying the class! It’s a fun workout! I have to say that I believe I’m gaining some ground in my personal battle of the bulge. :) I don’t know that it’s obvious to the world, but I can certainly tell there’s a difference! Yay!!! Keeps me motivated to keep on going. I’ve also noticed that I don’t really crave snacks or sweets much any more!! How lovely! :) Still, I think I will enjoy the red velvet whoopie pies that Stu is going to make me for my b-day this weekend! ;) Anyway, the interval training has been good for me because it’s short enough to be doable any day, and it really does work me out! Nice!

I’ve been crocheting like mad recently to get some hats ready for my nephew’s arrival! :) I’m hoping to get to do newborn portraits for him, but I realized I didn’t have many boy-flavored hats! So this is good. Now I’ll have a few in my arsenal and I have to say they are adorable!!! :) Can’t wait to use them on the lil guy!

I’ve recently discovered a radio station that we actually get way out here, that broadcasts Christian programs, like Pastor Greg Laurie and Dr. David Jeremiah. It’s been refreshing to get to listen to some of those programs through the week! I’ve missed that! I just wish they played Odyssey during the week. I think the boys would like it. They do play it on weekends at some point, so I’ll have to figure out when that comes on exactly.

The menu has been working well! :) I like that I don’t have to think about dinner as much! Just glance at the menu in the morning, and pull stuff from the freezer, if necessary. I only plan dinners, because our breakfasts and lunches are pretty standard.

Well, I feel like I’m boring even myself. I do have some more ‘exciting’ posts planned, but they require a little more effort, so you’ll have to wait. Ha! I’m not into effort today…. hence the title. ;) Have a great lime green Thursday!

Ta ta!

Mr. Organizer

2011
09.07

I just have to take a minute to tell you that my hubby is an amazing organizer. I’ve mentioned before that he’s been trying to reform my less-than-organized ways, and it’s uphill work for him for sure, but he hasn’t given up on me yet. :) Here is a shot of the “spare” closet that was an abyss of clutter until he took in in hand. It had been kind of a ‘catch all’ for stuff that really had no place. Well…. now it all does have a place!
DSC_1862

Let’s take a little closer look. Yes, each container is labeled and organized. Uh… I don’t think it’s alphabetical though. But seriously, considering that all my photography “stuff” is in here along with various and sundry beading supplies (ha ha ha, hobbies, sheesh) this is an amazing feat!
DSC_1860

On the bottom of that shot you might notice some wire baskets. THESE are the infamous and dreaded inboxes…. well, mine has been anyway. Stuart’s inbox is actually a very functional tool. He has had infinite patience with me trying to “learn” and implement this inbox system. It really is pretty simple…. but my mind just balks at it for some reason. My poor inbox stays in it’s space neglected and alone till it’s overflowing with stuff that I was supposed to deal with in a timely manner, until Stuart can’t take it any longer then he helps me deal with it. I do feel bad that I haven’t put more effort into the whole thing. But I have to say that a light was slowly dawning in my brain the last time that Stuart helped me empty/organize my inbox. The puzzling pieces started to fall into place and it’s making sense!! Uh-oh!! I don’t want to join the dark side, I want to stay in my own scatter-brained disorganization…. Ha ha, no, not really! I’d actually like to have more brain power to devote to the other things in life than trying to remember that next thing I need to do for whatever it was.

I’m very glad that my Hurb has the gift of organization, and I really do believe it’s a gift, and that he’s been patient and gentle with me. :) I know I still have a ways to go with this whole process, but I think that I really made a huge step in the right direction thanks to the help of my man! So stay tuned to see the new and improved Rachel who will be more organized and with it…. maybe. ;)
