Mornings

2011
08.19

Ugh…..

That, in a grunt, is how I feel about mornings. EVERY morning. I’m not a morning person. So many people say that, but I say it and MEAN it!! ;) I wish I was a morning person. I wish I could rise early, enjoy some quiet moments before the day and the family start to stir, wish I reveled in the sight of watching the sunrise. I’ve always said that there’s no big deal in a sunrise, it’s just a sunset in reverse. I LIKE sunsets. I’m awake at sunset time. Sunrises only serve to remind me that I’m awake WAY too early! LOL!

Can you change the “morning person” “not-so-morning” person part of yourself? Do you think? I don’t know. There have been stretches of my life where I did indeed have to get up at a wretched pre-dawn hour for various reasons. Believe me it wasn’t because I wanted to. I went one semester at college, or maybe it was the whole year, getting up at 5:30 each morning. It was awful! Then my work hours changed and I was working 12am to 3am or 3am to 6am shifts and that was bad too! I’d rather work the 3-6 shift because then I was awake already for first hour. The other one left me very very cranky because I still had to wake up by whatever time 7:30? to have my bed made for room check. Silliness….

But that’s neither here nor there. I still despise mornings. I often resolve to change my grumpy-got-out-of-wrong-side-of-the-bed self, but the resolutions usually only carry me through till bed time and by morning I’ve lost them in my sleep. :(

I haven’t been sleeping well recently. I’m usually ready to go to sleep at around 7pm, seriously I get so tired right after dinner! Just about the time I’m wrastlin’ with the kids through their bed time ordeal. Well, not Ella, she LOVES to go to bed, and I so enjoy that stage!! But the boys put up a monstrous fuss every evening. So by the time they are down-ish, I’m more than ready for some quiet evening time. But then I get my “second wind” and I’m wide awake. I’ve tried recently going to bed earlier like 9 something, but then I lie in bed and toss and turn till I think I’ll loose my mind! Trying to find sleep, when sleep isn’t trying to find you is the most useless waste of time! Bah!

However, the past couple of mornings, I’ve been staying away from the computer more and spending a bit more time interacting with the lads. Really all I want to do in the morning is nurse my coffee and stay curled up in a fetal position in the overstuffed chair, or escape into cyber land! I can’t do that though. It, much like the witching hour, is a time of day when the boys really REALLY need me. Even if all I’m doing is helping them put away toys that were left out, and pretending to “hide” behind my hands till they get close enough to grab and tickle, it makes a HUGE difference on their daily outlook. Mine too, if I’m honest. How can you not be happy when you’re causing your children to shriek with laughter because you’re tickling their tummies!?!

I’ve been convicted about my lazy, irresponsible reaction to mornings. Yes, they are a challenge, I’ve grappled with that fact my whole life. BUT they aren’t going to go away, and I can’t just pull the covers over my head and ignore them. As much as I’d love to!! :) I have an e-book on my computer called “Maximizing Your Mornings.” I’ve had it on there for awhile, but haven’t got around to reading it. I don’t like reading stuff like that on my computer, so I’m going to attempt to put it on the Kindle. I’m sure there are some brilliant ideas in that book, but what it boils down to is me choosing to NOT be selfish, and think of my kids instead of myself.

The difference is astounding. The last couple of mornings, the boys have played together better than they have in weeks! Seriously! And I think it is in part because they’ve had a bit more real mommy time in the mornings. Sometimes that makes all the difference.

Creamer re-mix

2011
08.18

Some time ago, you may recall, I swore off the chemical creamers in favor of a more economic and “real” homemade option. Well…. I have stuck to that. I generally use fat-free half/half with a bunch of honey a splash of almond extract and a bunch of vanilla! I like flavor! It’s been working well. I enjoy not buying the expensive stuff… but still, I just couldn’t quite get the homemade stuff just perfect. It was good, and works great, but somewhere in the back of my mind has been this slight dissatisfaction with the stuff. Something wasn’t working, and while it hasn’t in any way curbed or ruined my coffee drinking, it’s left it just…. ho hum, I guess. Hard do describe a vague nagging little bit of a thought that’s never really been defined. :)

I’d probably still be in a ho-hum coffee relationship had I not stumbled upon a second blog post about the “perfect iced coffee.” I had seen it once on Pioneer Woman’s blog, but this was someone else and the photos of the coffee just totally sucked me in and I knew I wouldn’t rest till I had made that “cold brewed” coffee! Actually, I did rest though. I had to wait till I got a gallon sized pitcher I could use. The cold brewed coffee is splendid, but this is NOT about the coffee. It’s about the creamer!!

With the iced coffee instructions was also the ‘recipe’ for “sweet cream” to go in the coffee. It’s so simple!! A can of sweetened condensed milk and a can of evaporated milk. That’s it! Once I tasted it in my first cup of iced coffee, I knew. I had found IT! Now I’m going to be using it for my regular creamer. That is after I finish up the other “stuff” that I have. ;) My frugal little soul can’t bear to waste it, but I’m already drooling over the thought of my sweet cream that I will be enjoying after this! ;)

I’ll probably still throw in some vanilla and a splash of almond, just because I love the flavor! But the “new” creamer recipe is so much sweeter and thicker, I know I won’t have to use as much. YES!!! I’m super excited about this. I know it’s just a coffee creamer, but it’s the little things that make ya happy! ;)

So you all should try it and see what you think. Oh, and if you ever want to taste an amazing, smooth and lovely iced coffee, you have to try cold brew! It’s awesome!!!!

Abs Diet and Tabata Training

2011
08.17

The other day while I was waisting time on pinterest, I came across a pin for “the world’s fastest workout.” Actually I’d seen it a few times before, but it captured my curiosity this time. Maybe it was because I was in a “need to get in shape” mood or something. Who knows. But I started following the links on the pin, and that led me to more info, and other stuff, and finally I figured out that it is something called Tabata Interval Training. Once I started looking up info on THAT it was somewhat familiar in that it really reminded me of INSANITY only much much shorter!! :) I like short! That, to me, is the biggest drawback for INSANITY. It’s too stinkin’ long!! And I really just can’t go “full blast” for 45 minutes 6 days a week. Honestly, I don’t think many can.

So I decided to give it a whirl. I found a Tabata MP3 that will tell you when to “go” with some music, and when to “rest.” This is important because the intervals are only 20 seconds long, and your “rest” is 10. You do 8 sets, and really have to go “all out” for those 20 second intervals. Now there’s a TON of stuff out there that says do it with weights, don’t even think about doing it with weights, do the same exercise for all 8 sets, do different exercises for all 8 sets, do any exercise you want, only do sprints… yadda yadda. So I finally came up with what looked good to me, since it’s obviously SO subjective.

I chose to do different exercises for the sets because I want to work different muscle groups, and not use weights because I’m interested in cardio and fat burning. I added some stuff to my whole workout that I want to keep, and the entire thing (which takes closer to 10 min with warm up and cool down) looks like this.
Warm up 2 min: Kettle bell swing
Tabata Training: 4 min
4 exercises repeated 2x’s
Cool down: slow jogging in place till I can breath w/o heaving! 2 min (or so)
Then I did mitotic crunches on the ball, and the “cat vomit” exercise (I know, I know) for abs.

And I was done! It really gets your heart pumping and your lungs (in my case) burning like crazy! I have exercised induced asthma, or something, but for 4 minutes, I can manage it! ;) Still, I was breathing hard for awhile after the workout. But then it was over, and I felt fine. I certainly felt like I had worked out, but I wasn’t all gross and nasty after a 45 min work out, and I felt good, not like a truck had hit me.

Fast forward to the next day. I woke up not even the teeeeeniest bit sore, and began to think it was all a bunch of malarky! Phoh, what’s the point of a workout that you can’t FEEL working, right? ;) Well fast forward to a little bit farther along in the day. I suddenly “notice” that my abs are a little sore. That “little soreness” gradually increased through the rest of the day till by evening I was REALLY sore! Ah, there it is… the “work” from my workout! WOW! Every bit of my abs were sore all the way to my ribs and then around my sides to my back. My legs were also sore, as well as my shoulders. Hmmmm…..

Today is 2 days after my initial work out, my abs are STILL really sore, but today is another workout day so we’ll see how that goes. Ha! At any rate I’ve decided to give this workout program a shot now, through the end of Sept at least. Can’t hurt, and it’s not like it takes up much time. ;)

Now to the abs diet. ;) Another thing I came across while I was looking up Tabata stuff was something called Abs Diet. I’m going to try it out. The thorn in my flesh (lol) is my flabby abs from having babies. I don’t know if this diet combined with the above workout will “fix it” but I think it’s worth a try. I’m going to be eating 6 meals/snacks through the day of the foods on the abs diet, which is every 2 hours through the day. I’m thinking that I won’t have a chance to feel hungry at that rate, ha! Anyway, I’ll keep y’all posted on how that works out. I have not, unfortunately, lost that 10 lbs that I wanted to this summer. *sigh* No, no, no. So I have to do SOMETHING drastic here before cold weather comes and all I want to eat are warm, yummy comfort foods. ;) Ha!

So stay tuned for progress reports as I go. :) My stick-2-itaveness is not so keen with these kinds of things, but right now I’m highly motivated. Wish me luck!

Qade’s Portraits

2011
08.16

I know I’m way behind on the Lad’s 4 yr old portraits, but it’s about as behind as I was last year, so they’re still a year apart! :) Ha! We had a fun little photo session yesterday and he was thrilled to have a picture with “the big four.” I saw a shot online that someone did with a child surrounded with matchbox cars and I just KNEW I had to do it with Qade since he is SUCH a car man! I think it’s my favorite of the session though I really like the “grumpy” cowboy and the dandelion as well! :)

Enjoy!

I found this little “advice column” interesting. Ha!

Some people just don’t get it.

3 at 10 months

2011
08.15

Since Ella is going to be 11 months (what?!?!?!?) this weekend, I thought I’d better do their 10 month pictures. So hard to believe they grow up so quickly. I get misty eyed looking back on these early pics of the boys! Can’t believe how quickly time flies! (sigh)

Oh well, on to the fun! Don’t want to get too sentimental. LOL

Heres our Qade man at 10 months. I have to tell you that this lad was cruising like a pro at this age. He was also eating like a champ. In this particular photo he is discovering left over “munchies” under his high chair and having himself a lil snack! Oh my!!! Ha ha ha ha!! Funny little boy!
DSC_1192

Myles had by 10 months recently perfected his “gimp” crawl! Remember? He always crawled on one foot and one knee! Ha ha ha! Loved to watch him. He still does it from time to time if he’s driving one of his cars. :) He wins the prize for the most teeth at this age. Look at those chompers!! Qade’s top 3rd and 4th were just through at this age, and Ella, has 3 on top. :) Love this grin!
DSC_5482

‘de Bella. :) What a lil sweetie! Ella is still using her “mermaid” to get around, though she does get up on her knees and crawl about 3 crawls before hitting her belly again. :) She is plagued with teething, poor lass! Her 4th top tooth STILL hasn’t come in, and I can see where the 2 molars on bottom are working their way up. Awwww. Wish she could have that done. She’s still smiling. LOVES to rough house with her brothers, amazingly!!
DSC_0195

She really wants to pull herself up on things, and succeeded on the boys little reading chair the other day. She was as proud as could be of that accomplishment! I have a feeling that her first birthday “cake smash” is going to be a flop since I’m still having a hard time getting that gal to eat anything solid! :) We are making progress though! Last night I was giving her those little “yogurt melts” and she would open her mouth when I brought one up to her on my finger. Before I had to sneak them in on a spoon because she would squirm and twist and absolutely NOT open up other wise. She get’s this HILARIOUS “sour” face whenever she has a solid bite. It’s so funny!! I’ll have to post one of those pictures too! You’d think I popped a lemon in her mouth by the way she looks. Anyway, she’s no where near close to feeding any of that stuff to herself, and not the least bit interested either. :) So birthday cake may just be a decoration. ;)

But I don’t want to think too much about her birthday yet. I want her to stay my baby even though I can’t make it happen. :)

Kitchen Renovation

2011
08.14

Here’s the long awaited post. :) Before’s and After’s, but please don’t judge the photography. ;) There are a lot of pics so I’m going to keep words, to a minimum. I’m sure you can appreciate that! ;)

This was the original kitchen. This house began it’s career as a double wide trailer, which my inlaws gradually added to, changed and basically rearranged while they were living here. The kitchen, however, had kept it’s old original self complete with 70′s style wall board, and plywood cabinets. This is how it looked.
DSC_4959

Shortly before Myles was born, I had this fit of “I can’t take it any longer” so my bro, James came over and hugely helped me paint it. Except we didn’t bother with INSIDE the cabinets so you could still see the old wall board. It was a sloppy job, but the colors were vastly improved. And I knew that my Dad-in-law was planning to redo it all someday, so it was a temporary fix.

Here’s us painting.

And here’s what it looked like painted.

Now let the reno begin! ;) I have to say again and again just how grateful we are to Curtis and Tiffany for ALL the hard work they did on this kitchen. Curtis is a working machine, and you’d better stay out of his way, or you might end up tiled. ;) BUT I was simply amazed with what they did in the time they did it!! WOW! So you wanna see, huh? huh?

This is what Curtis had to start out with.
P1030898

He got it sheet rocked, moved/built a couple of walls, taped and uh.. mudded? Oh yeah, he makes it look easy. I know one thing, construction will never be my gift.
P1030910

New plywood on the floors, some carpet removed, sorting out where the cabinets go.
P1030917

New light fixtures, sink, AND (ta-tum) garbage disposal!!! Oh, and Curtis did the rewiring, plumbing and all of that too!
P1030921

Tile work begun. They built a bar from scratch, and tiled the WHOLE countertop and the floor!
P1030926

Tiffany did all the painting, bless her! She also worked out those strong muscles and helped Curtis hang the upper cabinets! Lookin’ good!

It’s beautiful!! I absolutely LOVE it!! It’s so fun to be in there and cook in the “new kitchen.” :) Even Ella loves to squirm across the tile and sit and watch while I work in it! Ha! It’s an amazing space! We’re still slowly sifting everything into it’s new home, but these cabinets are amazing!! Couldn’t ask for a better kitchen!

Thanks so much Dad Noggle!!! You’ve got great ideas! Perhaps your next career could be an architect! And thanks SOOO much Curtis and Tiff for your work! You guys amaze me! I get tired just watching you, ha ha ha!!

Ella at 10 months

2011
08.13

Well this was my first attempt at Ella’s 10 month portraits, and due to the fact that she wasn’t very cooperative OR smiley, I was going to give it a go again, but after editing some of these decided to stick with them! ;) Ain’t I fickle! I just decided after looking over them for some time, I decided that they are BEAUTIFUL and even if she wasn’t all smiles, it captures her curious and serious sides very well. :) I went with kind of a “vintage” look on these, they fit the mood… or my mood which ever. :D

Might just be my fave!

Turn about is fair play

2011
08.12

I’m so incredibly behind! I have a million things to do today and the list just keeps getting longer. I already have that “stressy-panic-y” feel, but instead of relieving some of that by just getting it done, I’m blogging. Yes, I’m a completely messed up person, but you love me anyway. :) Actually blogging, for me, is therapy of sorts, and I’ll be much better capable of dealing with the rest of today if I spend a few moments here. Besides, I blog fast. Thoughts just leak out through my fingers and I can hardly type fast enough to keep up. ;) Glad for spell check, now if only they could put a “think twice” check on here too, THAT would be something! ;)

Anyway, here is what happened to me yesterday. I think I’m still spinning from it all and that’s why today’s loops have thrown me a bit more. But no big deal, I’m going to roll with the punches, and leave some laundry in the dryer till a more convenient time, and I’m NOT going to make my bed, so there! Ha! ;)

I was telling Stuart recently that I’m interested in taking a Zumba class that I saw a flier for in “town.” I don’t know much about Zumba, but I do have some FB friends who rave about it, so I’m interested. Besides it’ll be a good way for me to get out of the house and away from the kiddos once a week. I tacked on the added perk of getting our shopping out of the way so that it won’t have to be done on our busy-enough Sundays. Stuart likes the idea, so last night I was going to go check out the Zumba class. Just keep in the back of your mind, the fact that “town” is nearly an hour away…. K? That figures in just a touch. ;)

First I needed to drop something off at the UPS Store. Having done this, I realized that I needed a bathroom break, but I was also starving. Conveniently I located a Subway (my favorite fast food, because it’s not sopping in grease, not that it’s probably much better for ya, mind you, but it makes me FEEL better, ha) and made a bee line for the restroom. Wouldn’t you know it with 3 employees doing not much of anything apparently, there was NO tp in there. GRRRRRRRR!!! So now I was starving, had to go, and peeved. :( I was nice to the guy making my sandwich though, didn’t want him sneaking anything in there that didn’t belong. But I did tell him once he was ringing me up. Ha! Then I grabbed my sandwich and marched out. I scarfed it down while I was driving back toward Wally World, but I took the back road so I could find the place where Zumba was to be. While I was glancing at the buildings on that street I noticed that there were a lot of lawn chairs set up on both sides, and people were starting to gather. Uh-oh. :( Apparently there was a parade going to happen later for…. something.

Oh well. I made it to Wal-Mart and was crossing the parking lot, dreaming about the bathroom stocked with tp, and talking to Stu on the phone about which card I needed to put our purchases on. Now, here’s where things get really funny. We have recently switch from a “real” bank to an online bank, and all of this happened while I was in Albuquerque, so when my cards for the new accounts came in, they got put in my “in box.” In case you don’t understand that word, it’s a HORRIBLE contraption of torment and torture for those of us non-GTD-zelots. *sigh* Stu is working on me to become more of a compartmental organized person, but I think it’s uphill work for him for sure. Anyway, I ignore my inbox to the best of my ability till it’s overflowing and obnoxious and then I generally purge it by dumping most of the contents into the trash and stashing the rest in various “other” places till my procrastinating soul can manage to deal with them. (don’t tell Stu!) ;) BUT right now it’s been quite some time since my last purge, and I never found, or activated my new cards. Since we had still been using the old accounts some too, this wasn’t THAT big of a deal until yesterday. I failed to realize that the old accounts had actually been completely transferred and canceled. Uh-oh! So when Stuart asked me which cards I had and I told him, we realized I’d have to come right back home.

Unfortunately the vehicle was on E! I did have a little bit of cash in my purse, which doesn’t go very far on fuel these days, so I figured I could get enough to make it home. I headed out toward our normal gas stop, and it wasn’t till I got on the road that I realized I’d never made it IN to WM to use their bathroom! Yep… one of those days, ha ha ha!

When I got to the gas station I did a thorough search of the vehicle to see if there was any loose money floating around. Hey, ya never know? ;) And I happened to find my honey’s wallet since he had been driving that car to work! Yay!!!! He did have the new cards, BTW because he goes through HIS inbox very regularly. So I called and told him the good news, filled up the tank and planned to head back to WM to get our groceries! Yay!

However, when I left the station I was thinking about something. I can’t remember NOW what I was thinking about but I do remember thinking, because I was kinda driving on “auto pilot.” Safely, of course. But suddenly I “came too” and realized that I was traveling WEST on the interstate instead of back East to get to WM!!! Arg!! See, we stop at that station every time we have a “town trip” as the last thing we do before heading home, so it was just natural for me to get on the road home. And while the HUGE skies and open spaces out here are awesome when you’re jaunting down the road going somewhere, they also have drawbacks in that there aren’t very many exits, and they are FAR between. And while I may be a bit reckless in some ways, I’m not gutsy enough to use those “Official Use Only” crossovers. *sigh* So I had to drive miles… yes lots of them, down the road before I came to an exit I could take. LOL! Oh, but I had used the well stocked bathroom at the gas station, so this was quite a bit more bearable than it could have been. ;)

After that things went more “normally” if shopping in that Wal-Mart can. Still it’s more fun to do by myself than with the monkeys, so I did enjoy the time. However by the time I got out it was already well past when the Zumba class would have been over, even considering they had one. I had heard several mentions of the “parade” while I was shopping, and wasn’t that willing to try to find parking and then walk all over down town to check on the class anyway. Oh well, there’s always next week. :)

Now I have the cards I need… though my inbox is still a hot mess, and I’m more prepared to face life… and grocery shopping. ;)

The End

The 3 munchkins

2011
08.11

I’ve been trying… and trying…. trying some more (remember that little mouse pushing the elephant up the hill?) to get a picture of my 3 munchkins that I can print as a gallery wrap. *sigh* I need to have an octopus for an assistant to help get them all pointed in the same direction AND make them look at the camera, AND have them all with a pleasant expression on their little faces! :) I haven’t given up hope that I will succeed yet, but the next time I try… I’m going to have Stuart help at least. He may not be an octopus, but any extra hands will be helpful!! ;)
