11 Step Program for wannabe parents

2011
02.27

A friend posted this on FB and I thought it was hilarious, ha ha, so here ya go for a few chuckles!

Lesson 1

1. Go to the grocery store.
2. Arrange to have your salary paid directly to their head office.
3. Go home.
4. Pick up the paper.
5. Read it for the last time.

Lesson 2

Before you finally go ahead and have children, find a couple who already are parents and berate them about their…
1. Methods of discipline.
2. Lack of patience.
3. Appallingly low tolerance levels.
4. Allowing their children to run wild.
5. Suggest ways in which they might improve their child’s breastfeeding, sleep habits, toilet training, table manners, and overall behavior.
Enjoy it because it will be the last time in your life you will have all the answers.

Lesson 3

A really good way to discover how the nights might feel…
1. Get home from work and immediately begin walking around the living room from 5PM to 10PM carrying a wet bag weighing approximately 8-12 pounds, with a radio turned to static (or some other obnoxious sound) playing loudly. (Eat cold food with one hand for dinner)
2. At 10PM, put the bag gently down, set the alarm for midnight, and go to sleep.
3. Get up at 12 and walk around the living room again, with the bag, until 1AM.
4. Set the alarm for 3AM.
5. As you can’t get back to sleep, get up at 2AM and make a drink and watch an infomercial.
6. Go to bed at 2:45AM.
7. Get up at 3AM when the alarm goes off.
8. Sing songs quietly in the dark until 4AM.
9. Get up. Make breakfast. Get ready for work and go to work (work hard and be productive)

Repeat steps 1-9 each night. Keep this up for 3-5 years. Look cheerful and together.

Lesson 4

Can you stand the mess children make? T o find out…
1. Smear peanut butter onto the sofa and jam onto the curtains.
2. Hide a piece of raw chicken behind the stereo and leave it there all summer.
3. Stick your fingers in the flower bed.
4. Then rub them on the clean walls.
5. Take your favorite book, photo album, etc. Wreck it.
6. Spill milk on your new pillows. Cover the stains with crayons. How does that look?

Lesson 5

Dressing small children is not as easy as it seems.
1. Buy an octopus and a small bag made out of loose mesh.
2. Attempt to put the octopus into the bag so that none of the arms hang out.

Time allowed for this – all morning.

Lesson 6

Forget the BMW and buy a mini-van. And don’t think that you can leave it out in the driveway spotless and shining. Family cars don’t look like that.
1. Buy a chocolate ice cream cone and put it in the glove compartment.
Leave it there.
2. Get a dime. Stick it in the CD player.
3. Take a family size package of chocolate cookies. Mash them into the back seat. Sprinkle cheerios all over the floor, then smash them with your foot.
4. Run a garden rake along both sides of the car.

Lesson 7

Go to the local grocery store. Take with you the closest thing you can find to a pre-school child. (A full-grown goat is an excellent choice). If you intend to have more than one child, then definitely take more than one goat. Buy your week’s groceries without letting the goats out of your sight. Pay for everything the goat eats or destroys. Until you can easily accomplish this, do not even contemplate having children.

Lesson 8

1. Hollow out a melon.
2. Make a small hole in the side.
3. Suspend it from the ceiling and swing it from side to side.
4. Now get a bowl of soggy Cheerios and attempt to spoon them into the swaying melon by pretending to be an airplane.
5. Continue until half the Cheerios are gone.
6. Tip half into your lap. The other half, just throw up in the air.

You are now ready to feed a nine- month-old baby.

Lesson 9

Learn the names of every character from Sesame Street , Barney, Disney, the Teletubbies, and Pokemon. Watch nothing else on TV but PBS, the Disney channel or Noggin for at least five years. (I know, you’re thinking What’s ‘Noggin’?) Exactly the point.

Lesson 10

Make a recording of Fran Drescher saying ‘mommy’ repeatedly. (Important: no more than a four second delay between each ‘mommy’; occasional crescendo to the level of a supersonic jet is required). Play this tape in your car everywhere you go for the next four years. You are now ready to take a long trip with a toddler.

Lesson 11

Start talking to an adult of your choice. Have someone else continually tug on your skirt hem, shirt- sleeve, or elbow while playing the ‘mommy’ tape made from Lesson 10 above. You are now ready to have a conversation with an adult while there is a child in the room.

This is all very tongue in cheek; anyone who is parent will say ‘it’s all worth it!’ Share it with your friends, both those who do and don’t have kids. I guarantee they’ll get a chuckle out of it. Remember, a sense of humor is one of the most important things you’ll need when you become a parent!

Three at 5 Months!

Here’s the latest in my then and now pics of the monkeys at the same age! :-) Well, the monkeys and the sweet pea! She’s not a monkey yet, though I won’t be surprised if she follows in her brothers’ steps on that one. ;-) Ha ha!

It’s fun to go back and see my lads at the same ages as where our Ella is now. It’s so hard to remember that they were this small. They seem to have always been big boys! As for Ella herself, she is getting big WAY too fast for my liking. I think we’ll have to have a chat about that! ;-)

Anyway, heeeeeeeere’s the Qade man at 5 months. Contemplative little lad, no? Ha! Actually I think he was sleepy or something in this shot.

Myles! I was looking for all “serious” pictures this time around. It’s hard to find those of Myles because he was the smiliest baby EVER! Here’s the best I could do with him at 5 months. Not sure if this qualifies as serious, seems more like surprised, but what a cute face!!
DSC_9420

Our Ella Bella-Boo. She is a serious one for sure. She is happy and content, and chilled, but she seems to take a more serious view on things than her bros did at this age. :-) She’s already a thinker, you can see the wheels turning, and is also very observant. It’s going to be hard to pull anything on her because she’s so plugged in to what’s going on. Anyway, Ella gives smiles for sure, but she’s more conservative about WHO gets to have one than the boys were. :-) Funny lil lass!

Mired

2011
02.25

Confession time…

I read a kid’s book called… uh.. oh.. “The Phantom Tollbooth.” In it Milo found himself in the doldrums where nothing ever happens and it’s inhabitants were small slow-moving creatures called Lethargians. ;-) Yep, it’s fun. I wonder if I still have that book or if it got lost in one of my more radical purges. Hmmmm…. Anyway, right now in life, I am one of the Lethargians and am deeply mired in the doldrums. *sigh* Ha! Nice little bit of literary drama there huh?

This is what it basically boils down to. That flu we got awhile back REALLY knocked me down. It lasted, at least for me, about 2 weeks, and completely took the wind out of my sails an the umph out of… everything. Unfortunately I’ve been having a hard time finding my motivation to get back up and plugging along like I should. I’m in a rut, slump, whatever-you-want-to-call-it.

I haven’t been “in the mood” for laundry, dishes, cleaning of any kind, and definitely not cooking. I have been doing the bare-bones essentials of those things, but not with any heart for sure! Yes, I win the Worst Homemaker of the Year award, and it’s not even March. I just seem to have lost interest in any and all of those things. Not to mention the issues I’ve been having with my two toddlers that leave me with little left over patience for situations like Qade locking me out of the vehicle then staring at me through the window like I was speaking Mandarin to him as I told him to PUSH THE BUTTON!!!! to unlock it.

I’ve been completely unmotivated to continue on my weight-loss quest, and as I’m sure you’ve noticed I haven’t been posting weekly weigh-ins. I haven’t gained any, but I’ve not lost either. What can I say, I’m good at maintaining. :-) I haven’t done one INSANITY workout since the flu hit. I did go for one walk/jog, but over the course of… however long it’s been, that doesn’t make much of an impact.

I have recently (like in the last 2 days) mustered up some determination to “whip it” and hopefully will be able to get unmired from these blah’s. I have taken an interest in crocheting again, and have recently opened my own etsy shop, so those extra interests have been helping. I have a plan that includes being diligent about taking my SUPERMOM vitamins, going to bed earlier, rising from bed earlier (which is not easy for me to do when it’s chilly out!) getting outside at least once a day to get some sunshine in my soul and fresh air in my lungs. Feeding the birds is a good way to do that, and they appreciate it, I’m sure! I need to go back to having regular exercise, because that really IS a mood-booster even if it doesn’t feel so much so at the time! I don’t know that dishes, or laundry will ever thrill my soul, but I’m going to make more of an effort at just getting them out of the way so they’re not hanging over my head. Cooking I can enjoy, and will be more diligent about making weekly menus so that’ll take the stress out of the evening.

Believe me when I tell you that things aren’t THAT bad. Writing stuff down in a blog can be dangerous as people will read it all kinds of silly ways and before you know it the world is sweeping in on you to rescue you from yourself. ;-) Ha! It’s not like that. I’m not moping around all day in my bathrobe feeling sorry for myself. No, and in fact I’m basically fine, just find myself not so thrilled with all the “regular activities” that I have to do in my life. It’s going to change and it’s gonna be better, and I’m sure I’ll get my mojo back soon. :-) Putting it out there on the blog is just my way of beginning to deal with it. Besides I’d rather blog than deal with the couch full of clothes to be folded, dishwasher to be unloaded and a sink full of dirty dishes. ;-) Ha ha ha ha ha!! Just kidding!! I’ll get right on that….. after lunch!

Ta ta! Hopefully I’ll be back soon!

Okay, I know… I’m a bad blogger.

Sorry.

Life’s been… weird.

But here are some pics of my favorite Ella in the whole wide world for her 5 month photo shoot. We had fun for a few minutes this afternoon. She cheerfully modeled some of my recent crochet creations. :-) What a helper!

Here she is with the lacy wrap I made. It’s really more for a newborn as far as it’s usefulness, but she looked super cute anyway!

Fix-it-Friday

2011
02.18

So I realized once I came to my blog for this Friday’s fix, that I haven’t blogged in a WEEK!! Wow, I knew it was bad, but didn’t know it was that bad. I do have a blog-post a’brewin’ but it’ll have to wait. I’m really terribly busy *snerk* or something. ;-) Actually I do have a photo-shoot this afternoon with two adorable seniors, so I won’t have time to post probably today, but maybe tomorrow. So carpe maƱana! ;-)

Today’s fix was too adorable NOT to work with! I wasn’t really planning to do a fix-it today, but when I saw the picture, I simply HAD to! This little red headed baby is so tiny and so cute! Isn’t it amazing how unbelievably cute a baby can be even when you don’t see it’s face?? I’m amazed by them, always will be. Here was the original image.

Today’s fix it was just too cute! This little girl in that pose reminds me so much of my shy self when I was little. Awwww… makes me want to hug her! Anyway, here is the original image.
Fix-It Friday #86

I use Aperture for my edits.

In my first edit I was mostly trying to fix the lighting. The original is pretty dark. I bumped up the brightness. Did some skin smoothing on her face, popped the eyes a little bit with the dodge and saturation brushes, added an vignette and that’s about it. I did a teeny bit of saturation tweaking with red. This was the base that I used for my other two edits.

Cropped and used a high-contrast sepia.

With this one, I did a square crop, tilted it a tiny bit and of course flipped it.

Coffee Creamer

2011
02.10

Yesterday was my first attempt at real homemade flavored coffee creamer… well, sorta homemade. I didn’t make the half and half or anything else that I put in it, BUT I did put it all together and I did make it at home and it IS way more economical than buying the flavored stuff in the store. I’m not sure what’s in the flavored creamers in the store… I do know there’s no dairy, so what is it? Hang on, I’ll check.

It is:
Water
Sugar Partially Hydrogenated Soybean oil and/or
Cottonseed Oil
Less than 2% of Sodium Caseinate (a milk derivative(
Natural and artificial flavors (whatever that means)
Dipotassium phosphate
Polysorbate 80
Datem
Color added
Carrageenan

Oh my!! That’s the first time I ever looked at the ingredients list on those creamers, and now I’m so disgusted that I’ve been drinking that stuff!!! Ugh! Blah!! It’s no wonder we’re all dying of cancer. *sigh* Okay, so that’s what is in the store bought flavored non-dairy creamers and uh… they charge you nearly $4 a quart for all that …. stuff.

Well, I knew there could be a cheaper way to be getting my flavor fix with my coffee. A bonus I’m now realizing is that it’s much healthier as well!!!! My creamer is not “non-dairy” though so if you’re lactose intolerant then I guess you’re out of luck with this one. Sorry. :-(

I used a quart of half and half (It was a buck and some change), 8 tablespoons of REAL Maple Syrup, about a tablespoon Vanilla Extract and about a teaspoon Almond extract. I didn’t actually measure the extracts so that’s just a guesstimate! Mix all together in a pot and warm, don’t bring to a boil though. Once it’s all combined and warmed through, poor into container (I used the empty creamer container) and refrigerate. There will be slightly more than a quart, obviously, so I had some for my coffee right then, and a FULL quart container for the fridge! I like my creamer SWEET, so I found that the 8 T syrup wasn’t quite enough and I added some agave nectar after the fact. If you don’t mind sugar then you could certainly use that as well. I think I’ll try honey next time and see how that goes.

This made what turned out to taste like an Amaretto flavored creamer. The almond can be really strong so I’d do no more than a teaspoon and then test it to see if you want more.

I’m so excited about doing this! It makes me so happy to be SAVING money and actually drinking something REAL instead of a bunch of chemicals. Woo-Hoo!! Give it a try. I’m going to do some cinnamon flavored stuff and some caramel/vanilla sometime soon. You’re only limited by your imagination. It would be totally easy to add some coca and make a mocha flavored one as well!! Yay!!

Let me know if you try this and what flavors you came up with!

Toodles!

You NEED this!

Post Prego Musings

2011
02.09

My mom would be happy to tell you that for the 5th year in a row she is going to get a new grandbaby. :-) I am happy to tell you that it’s NOT US this time! ;-) Ha ha!! My sis-in-law is expecting their second in Oct. So far the pattern has been 2 us 1 them 1 us 1 them. Now if the pattern were to continue that would mean the next 2 years would be us again. I think it’s fairly safe to say that we’re going to let this pattern break! I think that I will enjoy not being pregnant for awhile.

Recently I was thinking over the past 4 years and how for 27 months of that time I was pregnant! It does feel pretty good to NOT be right now! Being prego with Ella was harder on me than the lads, and I’ll be happy to get back to “normal” if I can even remember what that was!

I’m in the midst of that oh-so-fun post pregnancy hair shed. And since my hair is so long I end up throwing out a rodent sized wad of hair whenever I clean my brush and after every shower. As happy as I am to see it go, my hair is way too thick, it does get old having long hairs all over the place, and I frequently think that there’s a spider or something crawling on my arm when it’s just a loose piece of hair. Ugh! :-)

The clothes thing is still an issue for me. I am slowly losing the extra weight, but my regular clothes are still far from fitting well. I simply refuse to buy cloths for this size now, so I’m stuck with yoga pants. I’m thankful for those though! They are so comfy and not nearly as “frump” as those old sweat pants. Still, I can’t wait to get back to real clothes!!! I can’t even remember what that’s like! Ha! I honestly don’t remember what size I was before we started having kids! I’m shooting for a 6 but I’d be completely happy with an 8 at this point! I’m not really asking too much am I? Just want the love handles, back rolls and belly bulge to be gone! :-)

Life is about change, and I’m so happy for the 3 little people who have created BIG change in my life. I’m SO thankful that I was able to carry them and have such healthy pregnancies! Because even through the morning sickness, discomforts and subsequent body changes, I really did have good pregnancies and I will always be thankful for that. I’m thankful for the 3 little people who live in my house! Though they sometimes drive me crazy with whining, or rob me of sleep by getting me up at 4:30AM to fix their blankets, they are 3 of my biggest reasons for being.

So while I’d like to find a good and healthy new normal for myself, I’m not sorry that I’ve gone through this process, and I won’t be sorry if I never do see that size 6 again. Because I have 3 very great reasons for the changes in my life. And even though I’ll be happy to NOT be the one pregnant this year, I’d never change the last 4 years even a bit!

The Bible in Living Sound

2011
02.07

I’ve mentioned on here before some of the issues that we have with getting the lads to bed. I have to confess that besides whining this is the thing that wears me down in parenting the most. I hate, absolutely HATE fighting with the boys to get them to bed. We’ve tried various tactics with more or less success but nothing that has really stood the test of time with them. But not one to be daunted, I have a plan!

Our bedtime routine has become sloppy to say the least. Part of that is because the thing that “works” the best for getting the boys to bed is to have Myles go down first and hopefully be sleeping by the time Bubba goes to bed. The problem with this is that it really elongates the bed-time routine, and it’s become less and less successful because Myles is getting old enough that he stays awake till his bro comes in and then it really begins to become a fight because they want to play! Ugh!

So here’s what I’ve come up with. I ordered, just today, a MP3 DVD of ALL 450 Bible stories from The Bible in Living Sound. The cool thing about it is that they give you a code to get the Audio DVD for FREE as well! Woot! It’s a pretty big chunk of change at once $75, but I looked on Amazon and you’d end up paying $.99 per track if you ordered them separately. So it’s actually a HUGE savings especially with the 2 for 1 deal. So if you’re looking for some great dramatized Bible stories for your own little monkeys, check this out. The second one would make a fantastic gift!!!

Where does this commercial come in to the bed-time routine, you may ask?

Ahh, glad you were wondering. Here’s how it’s going to work out in our house. At 7pm sharp our bedtime routine will begin. I’m working really hard at coming up with ideas to keep it a “happy” time. So I will commence by saying, “Time to get ready for bed” (then before the whining starts- I’ll have to talk fast) “Lets get jammies on and have a SNACK!” Snack is a magic word in this house that is always met with enthusiasm! ;-) Then we’ll do just that! After the snack of a graham cracker or something we’ll brush teeth! They also like the teeth brushing thing. Immediately following the tooth cleansing we will have a story from our Jesus Bible Story book and one other book of their choosing. (2 stories!) THEN comes the tricky part. They will go to bed together! Hopefully this will be close to 7:30. Once in bed I or Stu will sing them their favorite bed songs “Sunshine” and “Jesus Loves Me” and then turn out the light. They’ll have an MP3 player (read iPod) on their dresser loaded with the story selections for the evening. Hopefully the way it will work is that they will listen to the stories till they “drop off” rather than get in trouble playing. I know for a fact that they like to listen to something other than their noise maker when they go to bed so I’m really hoping that this works out. It’ll give us another “tool” to promote compliance as well because if they do decide to get up and play the stories will be turned off.

That’s the plan anyway. I’m going to stick to that routine TO THE T for at least a week before we allow any variations. I want them to get it down and know exactly what comes next and what to expect each night. I hope that it works, and I’m anticipating that it will, but I still do have a bit of that “dread” feeling. :-) I have this idea in my mind that bed-time can be a sweet time with our kids instead of a constant battle. Maybe that’s not realistic, but I’m going to keep fighting for it because every day shouldn’t have to end with battles!

There ya have it. Check out the stories, they have a spot on the home page where you can listen to a sample. They are so well done!
