Consequences

2011
01.20

Qade has been learning about consequences recently. He has always experienced consequences, but now he’s learning that they can be a direct result of his own choices. I do think that making that connection is an important part of training munchkins. The “Little Thoughts” books have been a great tool in opening different discussions about sin and punishment.

It’s only been recently that I’ve noticed that he really will work on something to avoid negative consequences. Potty training is one example. You know I had to put him back in diapers before Christmas. It was such a HUGE frustration! He got new “unders” in his stocking though so we put him back in those right after Christmas because he was using the pull-ups as an excuse not to stay dry. He had started doing business in the pot though, so that was good. Well, a week or so ago he once again was having “accidents” in his unders of the yucky variety. So I started putting him in the shower when it would happen and make him wash himself off. Now lest you get some horrible idea in your head it was NOT a cold shower! I’m not cruel. But for whatever reason he hated this “consequence.” I would always calmly explain to him that he had to take the shower because he chose to poo in his pants. After about 3 showers the “accidents” stopped. The next few times that he would “score” in the potty, he would gleefully say, “I don’t have to take a shower!” Not that I want him freaked out of taking showers, but I really don’t want him pooping in his pants, so the results of the consequences helped him make better choices.

Another thing that has become a HUGE issue for us is bedtimes. It’s a battle night after night to get those boys to just go to sleep! We’ve tried various tactics with varying levels of success, but none seemed to be the “magic bullet” to get us over this hurtle. I told you that I’d been keeping Qade up from his naps from time to time. Well I’ve decided that it needs to be a privilege that he earns. Yesterday was the first day that I told him he needed to go right to sleep at night in order to stay up from nap. He listened intently, but it didn’t take. Hence today his consequence was that he had to go to nap instead of stay up. I’m hoping that a couple of days of this will help it sink in for him. Somehow we’ve got to get the bedtime thing down better. There are a couple of other incentives that I’m going to try with them as soon as I can, but for now we’ll stick with this and see if it works. :-)

I’ve been feeling all “Marthaesque” recently and I’ve baked white bread and have yogurt “cookin.” A consequence of that can be that I won’t actually be losing any weight! ARG!! I need to learn a thing or two about consequences as well! ;-) BUT we’ll see what happens on the dreaded weigh-in day! Hope you all have a super fantastic Friday!

Lad’s room makeover

I told you before that my brother came out over New Years and helped us by painting the lad’s room. They had really outgrown the two-tone green. These colors fit them much better and the posters that Stu made are perfect! We just need one of Mater for the space on the other “red wall” as you will see.

I am not a frugalista by any stretch of the imagination. I can’t spend hours clipping coupons, comparing store fliers, and printing online discounts. It’s not in my makeup, though I tip my hats to those people who can do it. I know they get a rush from saving so much, and while I like to save, for me personally it’s so not worth the time investment. However I do have a few tips of my own on how to save a bit when it comes to the food my family eats.

I thought I’d do a couple of blog post about how I do our meal planning and shopping. One thing that I really want to do this year is to cut down on our grocery costs. I bought THIS BOOK awhile back and while it has some great ideas on cutting grocery costs, some I simply can’t do because of our remote location and most of the rest I was already doing. :-) So don’t buy it… if you seriously think you need it, look on paperbackswap.com because chances are I’ll be listing it there very soon. One way that is the simplest for me to save mulah is shop for meat on sale and then freeze it.

This week I spent $28.97 on some chicken and pork that was marked down to $1.9something a lb. That’s pretty good. So while it added quite a bit to our bill this time, just wait! Once I got it home my job was to divide it up into “meal sized” portions. With meat, I try to make sure that it’s a “main” ingredient because I have some carnivores who live in my house. But I still want to “stretch” it with the sides and veggies as much as possible. Today I mixed up some different marinades and started sorting. I ended up with 11 freezer packages of meat. That will end up being MORE than 11 meals because some will double with the leftovers being used for stir fry or fried rice or tacos.

So even just counting the 11 meals that would break down to $2.63 a meal, or $.65 a person. Now that’s just the meat, so to add in the veggies or rice or noodles whatever will obviously add cost to the meal, but seriously, you can’t get anything at McDonalds for $.65! So this is turning out to be a pretty cheap meal especially since the sides like rice and noodles are usually very cheap as well.

The great part is, this helps eliminate that on-no-it’s-4:00-what-do-I-fix-for-dinner-? feeling. :-) The next few weeks I’ll be shopping in my fridge for dinner! I’m interested to see how much this actually does cut down on the grocery costs since I will have all of the “main” dishes on hand. I’m also going to be doing more “shopping” in the pantry because there is stuff in there that just NEEDS to be used.

Next time I’ll tell you about my menu planning and how it helps save LOADS of stress, cuts down on trips to the store, AND saves you money!

Our Day

Today was a whoosh! Thanks in part to two great phone conversations I got to have with friends! Thanks Mirm, and Rach for chatting today! It always helps me feel more “alive” to have a good adult conversation, even if they are peppered with instructions to the kids who angelically like to take advantage of the fact that Mommy is distracted on the phone. ;-)

Anyway, other than that I got some of my household chores done, and chili for dinner started. I spent some time on the computer trying to figure out how in the world to use a new hair accessory I got yesterday. It’s a Goody modern updo pin. And it’s supposed to be completely easy, right? Hardy-har-har! I should have read some of the reviews first, I guess, but I bought it on impulse, I know that’s bad. But in looking into how to use this I have become convinced that I will get their “spin pins” because they seem so cool and keep your “bun” in place with minimal effort. I’ve been on this “I’m going to chop of this hair” kick recently. I mean it has been 6 or so years of the same basic style… or no style. But Stuart is fighting for the hair and really wants me to keep it. In an effort at finding a compromise I’m trying to find easier ways to make it look decent, and even in some cases, nice. SO the updo pin tempted me and I succumbed.

After watching several youtube clips on how to actually make the thing work, I still couldn’t do it. It looks so simple to watch someone do it, but to me it feels like I’m trying to rip my hair out in chunks! Ouch!! And if I do, perchance, get it in, the pressure on my head is so immense that there’s no way I could use it that way all day. So I went off looking for alternate methods I could use it for, and I think that I did find at least one. I think too it might be a matter of practice as far as making it work for the updo that it’s supposed to work for. I’ll keep trying it out, but next time I’m in town I’m going to look for the spin pins. The reviews on those were almost ALL really good!

Qade skipped his nap today. I’ve been letting him stay up because bedtimes have become such a huge ordeal in this house. I’m thinking that if he’s tired enough by bed maybe it won’t be such a fight…. time will tell. Right now Myles is fussing because he needs to be in bed, but we’ve put Qade down first. Having them in the same room has presented challenges this way.

A little Qade tidbit. Yesterday morning we ran out of creamer before I had my second cup of coffee, and when I ‘whined’ about not having creamer, Qade got a bit concerned. He went to his Dad and said, “You need to go to the store to get some cream for Mommy!” What a tender hearted little dear! :-) I quickly assured him that it was no big deal and we would pick some up when we went shopping. Ha ha!

Tonight we had a family over for dinner. Stu works with the guy at the high school and the wife is involved with special ed in the schools. They have 3 boys from 7 to 1.5 so that was fun! The boys had a good time with their “new friends” and we got some more grown up conversation in as well. Their youngest son is built like a tank, a lot like Myles, and it was fun to watch them play. The chili was a hit too so that’s good! I never make it the same way twice so it’s hit or miss on just how spicy it will be. Tonight it was perfect! Especially considering there were 5 munchkins eating it.

Stuart sent me a link to this blog article today thanking me for not being “Suzy.” It’s a good article for we wives to read and consider though. And while I’m glad that he doesn’t think I’m like Suzy, I know there are ways that I need to improve in how I respond and act toward him. Good thoughts.

Well, that about does it for me. I posted another pic of Ella to my 365 blog if you’re interested. ;-) I try to take a pic-a-day of my babies first year anyway, so it should come as no surprise when she shows up in a lot of my 365′s.

Have a swell night!

Someone may get tired of seeing these close up “eye” pictures of Ella, but it won’t be me. :-) She’s just so sweet, and I love getting right in her face with the camera and trying to catch some of those flitting baby expressions. Love it!!

Diet for this week

2011
01.16

As I’ve told you before, I just can’t ‘diet.’ I start to think about food ALL the time when I decide that I’m “on” a diet. So I’m going to fool my brain into thinking I’m not on a diet, but I am going to plan out my meals for this week better so that I can get this thing going the right direction. I do not want to be stuck fighting these same pesky 2 pounds any longer!! :-)

Here is the “plan” for this week, lets hope it works!

Breakfast: Eggs! I know that eating protein in the morning helps keep me fuller longer, I do know this. The problem is, I almost NEVER want protein for breakfast. So this will be a challenge for me this week, but I’m writing it down so that you can all help keep me accountable by reading it! ;-) I’ll most likely eat them scrambled with some sweet peppers thrown in. The boys LOVE eggs for breakfast BTW, so they will get a kick out of it this week. I’ll probably eat a grapefruit too, cause I’m on a kick. I found them at Safeway today for less than $3 for a bag of like 7!!!

Lunch: Bowl of Oatmeal cooked w/ whey, or soup, or tuna, and a grapefruit or apple.

Dinner: Whatever I have on the menu but watching portions carefully!

Snacks: Apples, oranges, grapefruit, celery any ol’ time

Water: At every meal and between meals…. but I will still have coffee in the morning. It just must be! ;-)

I’m sure that by following this and continuing to plod through my workouts, blah, I will see results. Hopefully this week I’ll see some really good results, cause I could use a “good news” week for sure!

Toodles!

Weigh in week 5

2011
01.15

Bah-humbug!! I think the first few weeks of stellar weight loss were just taunting me! :-)

I did re-lose the 2 pounds that I gained back last week. SO that is good, I know. But when I think about the fact that I am now at the same place I was TWO WEEKS ago, it’s depressing. *sigh* I’m glad that I can look at my three little miracles and remember that it was/is all worth it. I’m not glad that I can look back at photos and think of how I just took that thin me for granted. ;-) Ha ha!

My self motivating (I hope) thought for the day is “As long as it’s 2 steps forward to 1 step back, I’m still making progress!”

I did do INSANITY 3 days this week. I missed Wed, and I missed yesterday too because we had company… at least that was my excuse. ;-) I hope to do it today though. My abs are killing me today for some reason though, so it’ll be an interesting workout as they are pretty “core” intensive. I haven’t been able to take my walks because the road is a natural disaster. Guess that’s the perk of living down a dirt road. I still don’t enjoy the workouts, they are rather like torture. BUT I’m continuing to do them on the faith that they will eventually make a difference. On that day when I can wear my “skinny” jeans again, I will enjoy it! ;-)

Aperture Brushes

01.12

So Stu got me Aperture 3 and I have had it for awhile, but only JUST installed it. First I kinda forgot about it, and then the disk reader on my iMac went out so I couldn’t, then…. but wait, you don’t need all those details. Ha! Just know that NOW it is installed and I have been playing with all the new fun features! I’m now completely convinced that I won’t be switching to Photoshop! This program does what I want and what I need and is SO SO SO SO simple! Love it! The new “stuff” that I’m super excited about are the brushes that I can now use and the presets that I can also add to. It’s great!

Here’s a non-Ella picture for you! Ha ha ha!! I know you all love seeing her sweet baby cheeks too! BUT I have to say that I think this is a way cool picture! I took this in the candle light the week before New Years when our power went out. It went out before Qade had gone to bed and he had a BLAST running around with his Daddy and his new Christmas Lightning McQueen flashlight! ;-) Ha! Anyway, we sat together near the candles and he had a snack of trail mix before I took him to bed as well. I took quiet a few pictures of him trying to get at least ONE that wasn’t blurred… low light, ya know? So he was messing with the curtain when I snagged this one, and thought it was just too awesome. Sometimes the non smile pics can be the best ya know?

Candle light

Hope you enjoyed that. The next post… which is coming up in about 10 min WILL have pics of Ella, but since it’s one that’s already been “officially” posted, I don’t think it counts.

Whew-ee, my workout tonight was a killer! Ugh! I sure hope it starts to pay off in a big way because it’s hard to do! I rode the bike today too for a few minutes. But that was mostly because this morning I simply could NOT get warm! It’s been SOOOO cold here! As in minus digits at night! Brrrrrrrr!!! I really don’t like to be cold, so I got on the bike hoping that getting my blood moving a bit would help me warm up. I think it did. :-)
