“No?” “Yeah, snow.”

2010
12.31

That was a quick conversation between my niece Helen and Qade as they stood at the window watching the snow fall. It snowed here for 2 days this week, and while today the sun is shiney it is NOT warm in the least so it’s blindingly white and beautiful outside! The lads were begging to go outside this morning, but it’s actually colder today with the sun shining than it was when the snow was falling, so I vetoed that idea. They did play in it some yesterday till the got “cold” and very whiney about it. I fixed it though by giving them sippy cups of “warm chocolate” as opposed to hot chocolate which might be met with some resistance. Don’t like anything hot you know. :-)

Speaking of temperatures the other night I heard Myles’ pathetic wail over the monitor at 1:45am and stumbled my way into his room to find the problem. Usually it’s that his cup has run dry or that he cant find it or something. Well this time he was telling me something that I was having a very hard time figuring out and he kept kicking at his blankets while at it. Finally I realized he was telling me his feet were cold, only I knew he meant hot because he had socks on and was adament about getting the blankets off! :-) I helped him out by taking his socks off and pulling back his covers. Having thermo-sensitive feet myself I can understand what he’s going through…. what I cant understand is why he won’t just pull his socks off on his own rather than get me out of my comfy bed to do it! Ha! From now on though I’m taking the socks off before bed and his blanket can do the job of keeping his tootsies toasty!

The boys room is getting a much needed makeover! My bro James agreed to come paint for me as part of our Christmas gift! He’s so awesome!! The two tone green that I was so crazy about when Qade was a baby has been out grown, and generally damaged by two very rambunctious boys! Their bedding is Lightning McQueen for Qade and cars and trucks on Myles, so things kinda clashed in there. So we’re brightening things up (really) with red and blue paint! Wow! It’s really going to pop! I’m also moving their furniture around and took the rocker out of their room. That was kind of a sad moment for me. I told Stu that it didn’t need to be in there any more since I rarely use it to rock them before bed now. Sad sad sad that my babies are getting grown up. :-( BUT they still like to be rocked throughout the day so the rocker is now in a place of honor (by the music player!) in our living room.

When I told Qade that his cuz and Uncle and Aunt were coming he was thrilled! The lad LOVES spending time with family! But when I told him that we were going to have his room painted he was a little disconcerted. OCD children have a difficult time with change. Which is why I warned him about it several days in advance, to give him time to process. He kept telling me, “But I like it green!” Green is his proclaimed favorite color which is no surprise considering I surrounded him with it from the time he was an infant. ;-) Stu and I kept talking up the “new” colors and how “cool” his room will be. Ha ha! Every time we mentioned Uncle James coming he’d say, “Why is he going to paint my room?” Funny lad! After the first coat of blue went up and he got a peek at it, Qade told me, “I’m glad Uncle James is here.” :-)

The lads had a “camp out” in the living room with Daddy last night since their room was kind of paint smellin’. They are likely to do it again tonight though we are all hoping that no one has to stay up till midnight! Barbaric tradition if you ask me! I’d like to greet the new year when the sun is already shining on it and I can see it properly! ;-) The boys were up far too late last night as it was and this morning it was pretty obvious. Naps have been interesting since their room is in the works, but right now the house is peaceful! Myles is snoozing away in the crib in Ella’s little room. Ella is sleeping in her pack-n-play in our room, and Qade is crashed out on his sleeping bag behind the easy chair in the living room. :-) It works!

Speaking of sleep, Ella has been sleeping through the night like at little champ! She got me up once at 4something in the past week. The rest of the time she’s been sleeping till at least 6:30 and usually it’s been 7:30!!! This makes me one very happy Mommy! Especially since one of my “resolutions” is to get up earlier. *sigh* I’m not going to write my resolutions out just yet. Probably save it for Monday when the “vacation” is really over, but I do have several that are going to be “high impact” resolutions. I know it needs to happen though. Ultimately good changes but will take a little getting used to.

Anyway, enough blather for now. Enjoy your New Year’s weekend!! We are!

Christmas in pictures

I was going to write a big blogpost all about our Christmas, but decided since pictures are worth a thousand words I’ll just let them do the talking with minimal input from moi. ;-) Believe me you’ll appreciate it since I can be SO long winded when yacking about MY family. :-)

Bestest Christmas gift ever!

I discovered a ring some time ago and kept putting little bugs (read e-mail) in Stu’s ear about what a great gift this would be! :-) I was SOOO happy to find it after unwrapping a HUGE box and opening subsequent smaller boxes.

Weigh in week 2

2010
12.24

I suppose I’ll start with the confessions. ;-)
1) I did NOT do INSANITY on Friday after my first weigh-in post. :-( Bad me! I think I’ll move the posts to Saturday next week so that I have a reason to stay motivated through Friday.

2) I did not do as well with exercise over the weekend, but part of the problem was yucky weather that prevented me from walking like I had planned… still, my bad.

Okay so on to the weigh in. This week I was down another 2 pounds!! That’s 5 pounds in two weeks. Still seems kind of slow to me, but I know that healthy weight loss goes slow and steady so I’m encouraged. At least I didn’t stay the same!!

I did the exercise bike on Mon, INSANITY on Tues, nothing on Wed (bad me!) and INSANITY again yesterday. I’m not enjoying the workouts. They are VERY hard and I can’t keep up, of course, which is discouraging. BUT I’m trying my best to pace myself through the workouts and keep moving as much as possible even if it’s not at the level of all the super fit models on the DVD. By the way… skinny girl’s legs jiggle too when they have to jump all around like monkeys! Just thought I’d get that off of my chest. ;-)

I’m still working on portion control and eating more raw fruit and veggies. It seems to be working, and I don’t find myself as hungry as I’d expect. Plus eating more mindfully is helping me realize that a lot of the foods I’d just munch on before, really don’t taste that good to me now. :-) This is a plus! I did have a piece of Hershey Pie for my Hurb’s birthday last night, but if I have another I’ll cut it in half. It was really rich and I didn’t need the whole piece to be satisfied for sure!

So there ya have it. Week two! Let’s see if I can keep up the good work! It’s way too early to hit a plateau!

They hear EVERYTHING!

My oldest child is ALL ears, and he uses them! :-) Now that he’s so much more verbal he pays attention to things that people are saying around him even if they aren’t talking TO him. When I’m recounting some of his antics to my mom over the phone or even telling Stuart over dinner something that he did, he really perks up. He will often follow up with, “Why I did….?” whatever it was. All the while with this pleased little grin on his face especially if it was something funny. He’ll also ask, “Why are you laughing, Mama?” If I chuckle at anything he did.

Qade often brings things up days, weeks, or even months later surprising me with his memory and recall. Yesterday I asked him to turn the light off in his room and he replied, “Because we have to pay money for it.” Which made me laugh! One time several weeks ago I asked him to turn off a light and when he asked why, I told him that it uses electricity and we have to pay for it, and when we don’t need the light on it’s wasting money. Ha ha! Sometimes I go into those technical kinds of answers hoping to head off any further “why” questions. BUT apparently he was indeed listening! :-)

We also had a conversation about camp yesterday and Qade was telling me that he “renimbered” playing with Benjamin at camp. Then he said, “Baby Ella was still in your tummy at camp.” Wow! I guess I just don’t expect those kinds of things from a 3 yr old. I’m surprised that he can “renimber” that Ella was in my tummy and before that, though I shouldn’t be. That kid’s got a fantastic memory!

Myles little conversations keep me humored as well. He came up with this thing that he thinks is SO hilarious, and I admit it is pretty funny! When I’m changing his diaper, after the old one has come off and whatever cleaning needs to be done is finished, he’ll squeeze his legs together SO tightly and say, “No space, Mama! No space down-ere” and he’ll laugh and laugh. Then I have to tickle him to get him to relax enough that I can get the NEW diaper on. Ha ha!

This morning I asked Myles to go find his cup in his room so I could fill it with milk for breakfast. This is a tradition. Each morning he has to find his night time cup before breakfast. Today when I asked him, he piped up enthusiastically, “Yes, I can, Mama!” He has become a great little helper when I give him tasks to do. He needs more specific instructions than just “clean up your toys” but he follows through really well once we get him focused. :-)

Myles has this funny way of assenting to information with a nonverbal “mmmm.” Because usually his thumb is in his mouth, but it cracks me up because once again if Stu or I go into some detailed explanation that we know he cannot possibly understand, he’ll often just say “mmmm” or “yes, Mama” as if he knew all of that all along. ;-D

It’s so fun to have verbal kids! I remember when Qade was born and how I just couldn’t wait for the day where I could really talk to him! Now it’s here, and I love it! His strong will can be a super challenge at times for me, but it’s tempered with the fun times of just chatting with my lads! Since we’ve put up our Christmas tree one of Qade’s favorite things to do, he asks nearly every day, is to lie on the floor with pillows by the tree and talk about our favorite ornament and the lights. It’s one of those big Ahhhhhhhh moments in parenting that just feels like a huge comfortable sigh. :-)

We’re super excited about Christmas tomorrow. Qade associates Christmas with the tree so to him it’s been “Christmas time” for weeks now. I’m not sure if he fully grasps that we’ll be opening all the gifts tomorrow, but I’m super excited to see both the boys reactions to their gifts!!!

I hope that you all have a wonderful Christmas with your families and celebrate “Jesus birthday” as Qade has been saying. :-)

3 at 3 months

So here’s my next installment of my 3 amigos in the same stages. I tried to find a similar pose with all of them, but it didn’t work out this time around. Perhaps next??? :-) It’s fun to go back and see how little my big-boys were! They seem SO big now! Qade ended up looking entirely too old on our Christmas card this year. How in the world did that happen?? :-) I’m still finding it hard to believe that Ella is already 3 months old! She already seems way too big! I need to get some pixy dust or something to keep her little!

Grinchy

2010
12.22

I started reading this article about What the Grinch and Expectations have in Common and I thought it was too good not to share. I’ve often felt the pressure, I’m sure you have too, of having that perfect Currier and Ives Christmas with all your friends and relatives, and just living out those amazing Christmas songs of everyone happy and smiling and passing around coffee and pumpkin pie while those chestnuts merrily pop away on an open fire. :-) Ha! Sounds great, and it’s a brilliant fantasy, but that’s pretty much all it will ever be. You can stress yourself out, and in the case of this article, your marriage out by trying too hard for that pie in the sky perfect Christmas.

Now I personally don’t think there’s any reason why it can’t be an amazing time of year, and family fun and cheer… but that’s where the expectations have to come in line with reality. At least for me. It seems every year I have this truth pounded into my skull again… one day, I’ll be ready for it. ;-) Ha! I get the idea in my head of what Christmas and Christmas time is going to be like. Even though I try my best to keep it relaxed and informal, I still inevitably end up stressed out over something. And I know it’s just because my expectations are off. A very simple thing like making rice crispy treats with the monkeys can become a monster of an experience. Because I have it in my head that it’s going to be so fun to be in the kitchen DOING something together, and they are just going to love being part of the process. Well, I chose that particular treat because deep down I knew that to get them through even an exciting fun project like that would be a miracle and crispies take all of 15 minutes to put together. Just so you know, we didn’t make it through those 15 minutes having a wonderful family moment to remember for all time. One son had a meltdown and was banished from the kitchen for the rest of the time. Scenarios like this is why I’m generally reluctant to do many “fun” projects. I’m a work in progress what can I say. :-)

Anyway, the article was a challenge to me and I wanted to share it with my friends. :-)

Hope that your week is going swell! Tomorrow is the birthday of the bestest man ever!! We will be having much celebrating and gift opening and Hershey Pie eating at our house. Hope you have a good one too!

Guess who’s 3 months

Today our little Ella is 3 months! A quarter of her first year is gone already! So hard to believe! I know she’s going to be TOO big before I know it, so I’m enjoying these little moments to the fullest! Our girl doesn’t like to be rocked to sleep and it’s seldom that she’ll even rest her head on my shoulder or chest, but when she’s sleepy she does kind of just snuggle in a little, minus the head, and I just love that feeling of her weight in my arms! She’s a precious little girl and I’m already so blessed to have her in my life!

Doc visit

2010
12.18

So Wednesday I had to take Myles and Ella to the doc for their 2 year and 2 month check ups, respectively. I was dreading it, as I mentioned because if the shots part. Turns out the part I should have been dreading is the temp checking. ;-) Yeah, weird.

Qade got to spend the morning with his “best friend” Danielle. :-) I’m very very thankful that I had someone to leave him with as I’m sure I couldn’t have kept him under control while dealing with the others at the doc’s office. We have a great pediatrician, and I no longer dread going to the visits because of the doctor at least. Whew! But I did learn something this time around. Even if it saves me an “extra” trip to town I should NOT schedule 2 of my kids’ appointments at the same time. Ugh!

We got there plenty early, for once, and were getting along fine and dandy in the waiting room. Ella was happy as a clam in her seat talking to me and smiling. THEN the nurse called us back. And they start the visit by innocently swiping a thermometer across each child’s head. For some reason this was a cause for extremely hurt feelings on Ella’s part. The poor baby starting wailing like monsters were after her as soon as the nurse took her temp. What in the world? I was mentally prepared for her to become hysterical after the shots part, but this… no this was a surprise. She continued to wail at the top of her very healthy lungs for the ENTIRE visit. I could barely hear what the doc had to say about either child. Oh brother.

She finally calmed down after the doc left and we were waiting for the nurse with the shots. My least favorite part is having to help hold the kids down while they get their shots. Our nurse on Wed was great though, she was very fast which is the best way to be when you have to give multiple shots. I gave Myles his tootsie-pop to hold while he got “pinched” and he actually did very well. He did, of course, cry a bit, but as soon as I got his britches back on and he had his sucker he was fine and dandy.

Ella, for all the fuss she put up before, wasn’t nearly as upset with the shots. Ha! Strange little one. She cried of course, but I had her bottle ready, and she was soothed very quickly.

So Myles weighs in at 29.5 pounds. Ella is 12 lbs and 7 oz. I can’t remember how tall either of them are… just too many numbers for me at the time.

Ella has done really well with her shots. She has had a slight temp, and was a leeeetle bit more fussy, but not really much. She’s such a sweet baby. Myles did fine for the first day, but has since been a very sick little lad. :-( Poor guy! I’m not sure that it’s all directly related to his shots. He had a “stomach” problem yesterday and didn’t keep much down at all most of the day. I’m thinking he must have picked up a ‘bug’ while we were at the doc… oh yay.

Today he did manage to keep some food down. He was actually interested in eggs and sausage for breakfast, but I only let him have a little, not sure how his belly would react. I’ve been keeping him on fluids, which he seems to tolerate pretty well. He has had some crackers, but really hasn’t been otherwise interested in food. Which if you know our Myles you realize must mean he doesn’t feel well. He’s our muncher! He’s had a fever too, so I’ve been intermittently giving him motrin and pepto throughout the day. Poor little lad is just feeling so miserable. He’ll tell me his tummy hurts and he just wants to be held, but not touched! :-) Such a silly guy. He spent most of his day lying on a towel on the couch watching “shows.”

Hopefully tomorrow he’ll be feeling much better. It’s hard to see your lil ones down. His grandpa and grandma Noggle are here this weekend, and I know he wants to be up and playing with them, but he just has felt too awful. I doubt that we’ll all be making it to church tomorrow since he’s not well. Pray for him if you think of it. I know that I’ll appreciate it for him! ;-)

Happy weekend!

Weigh in week 1

2010
12.17

So today was my first week weigh in. I’m happy to report that I’m down 3 pounds from my starting weight!! Though I think I’m going to move the weigh-in to Saturdays. Because after seeing the scale this morning I’ve lacked motivation. Still it has helped knowing that I’m going to be posting it out there for all the world to see. ;-)

As for the exercise so far I’ve only got 1 day of walking in this week and this weekend isn’t too promising due to weather (muddy road) but I did do INSANITY for 3 days, today will be the 4th. I should have done it Wednesday as well, but I don’t feel guilty about it. That was our “trip to the doc day” and things got even worse with Qade once I came home, so there was no way. :-)

Over all I feel good about this week. The exercise has been hard, but I feel more energetic, and am already seeing improvement. Besides it gives me something to do for ME. Since I so often am the last person on my “take care of” list it’s nice to have something to do each day just for me even if it is sweaty and difficult. :-)

Here’s hoping that week 2 goes at least as well. A 3 pound a week change would be spectacular!

Thanks for keeping me going!
