Photo Wednesday!

Hi Friends! I have been neglecting you and I’m sorry, but that’s camp! :-) Thought I’d at least post a few photos so you can see what we’ve been doing, a little. I’ll try to do some more this weekend, but don’t hold your breath! You might end up a lovely shade of deep blue!

We went with the staff to Big Lake for a dinner picnic and these are some of my favorite photos from that day. I just love the perspective AND the sun flair on this one!!

The lads LOVED the watermellon and in fact it was about all they ate! Qade had 6 or 7 pieces!!!

This has got to be one of my favorite pics ever!

Here are the lads sporting their new summer hair cuts! I’m still intimidated about cutting their hair, but it turned out okay.

Now for the sad pictures! Poor littlest buddy hasn’t been feeling well, and before I realized that he actually had a fever and THAT was why he wanted to cuddle, he lost his balance on the steps of our cabin deck and scraped his face all up. :-( It was a sad evening for the lad! There was a splinter nearly through his cheek (not deep, but from bottom to top) and I had to enlist the help of one of our wonderful camp nurses to help get it out. He was such a brave boy the whole time!! It was later when we were comforting him that we realized he was very hot, and did indeed have a temperature. :-( So sad!! His face looks simply awful, but he doesn’t really seem to notice it too much. At least it doesn’t keep him from jumping on the bed and sliding, face first, over the couch! He is taking a trip to the clinic today though, just to see if they can figure out why he’s had a temp, and check to make sure there’s no infection in his cheek. My poor baby boy!!
Day it happened.

I have a pic of the actual splinter that I’ll post later too. He’s been so good about the whole thing! I just want him to get feeling better so he can enjoy the 4th weekend with all his family that are coming over.

Hope those pics can tide you over for a little while. Stuart paired up our wireless keyboard with the iPad today so I should be able to post a little more often these next two weeks. We’ll see. Anyway, enjoy your 4th of July and remember….

Yes friends and faithful readers. It is AT LAST the long spoken of, but never written “brewing post.” Ha ha ha!! Though to be honest, it’s not the post that’s been brewing. I’m just writing off the cuff. The IDEAS that it contains though have been rattling around in my noggin for quite a while. And to be perfectly honest the main reason that I haven’t written it yet is because I’m lazy and actually putting these concepts into words and publishing it for all the world to see means that I myself am going to have to do some changing. When I think about it, it seems like a LOT of work for ME, but I think, eventually, it will pay off in HUGE ways that will make it worth it all.

So you may or not have an inkling of what this post will contain, but I’ll keep you in suspense no longer. It’s about structure. Yep, that’s it. Hope it was worth the wait. ;-) Toodle-oo!!

Okay, so you know my wordiness enough by now to realize I cant just leave it at that! :-D I’m sure I’ve mentioned that I’m a fan of schedules. For itty bitty babies through high school, college and just life! The schedule of course, flexes and completely changes with different phases of life, but in order to really get things done, and ever accomplish anything you HAVE to have some kind of schedule. When I was younger (as in jr. high even) I used to write out my day in chunks of half hours so that I’d have a schedule to follow. That usually lasted for a couple of days and then I’d can it. I don’t know that being THAT scheduled is necessarily healthy. I prefer to have wiggle room in my schedule and more than doing everything at the exact same time each day, doing things in the same order. For example: have breakfast, brush teeth, comb hair, get dressed. That’s the order of the schedule, but it might happen at 7am or start at 7:30 and if we’re LUCKY on a weekend 8!!! ;-) Know what I mean?

Now I have kept a loose schedule with the lads, and granted there have been some uh… diversions this year. But I realize now that I, as the mom, really have to step it up. I find myself somewhat frazzled and at the end of my rope more than I want to be. Sometimes that’s just going to happen. Life can’t always be predictable. But as far as I can influence it, I believe that having a more structured routine will bring peace and SANITY to the entire house. *Ahhhhhhh* can we all breathe deeply for a zen moment! Ha ha ha!! ;-) Hey, I’ve seen it work, I’ve even put it into practice with other people’s children and I know for a fact that it brings good results. It’s just the getting there part that’s work.

And that’s why I’ve been putting it off. Yes, I can be a procrastinator too. Sorry to burst your bubble. But I kinda enjoy escaping into my “cyber world” of Facebook friends and blog feeds. I’m isolated! I don’t have adult conversation!! I NEED to feel connected to the outside world!!! Those are all valid, honestly. But they don’t need to take up a huge chunk of my time. And if they are pulling me away from my kids, and home responsibilities then they are actually a BAD thing!! So setting up a structure and having a little LESS wiggle room in my schedule will actually be a good way to help me be more disciplined as well.

This year I’m going to be babysitting 2 little girls. They are our “friends” from our play dates that you may remember me mentioning. Well, the oldest is 4 and a half and the younger one is just a couple months younger than Myles. I have decided in our new ‘structure’ to begin preschool with Qade and Danielle. *sniff sniff* This makes me kind of sad and nostalgic because I just can’t think that Qade is REALLY old enough for this. But I KNOW that he is. His mind is like a little sponge right now and I want to capitalize on that and be the one who is “filling” his sponge with good things. So I have purchased the preschool curriculum from Answers in Genesis and am actually really excited about teaching him and Danielle from a Christian world view. This will help us have some extra structure to our mornings. It’s going to go something like this.
Breakfast
Singing time With ALL of the kids, except baby girl, most likely!
Days of the week review
CHORES! (this’ll be exciting! I’m going to print out picture cards of the chores they are responsible for and then they can put those in a basket once it’s finished)
Free-play (for about 1/2 an hour they can play whatever they like)
School time! (for Qade and Danielle this will likely last about an hour)
Room time! (for Myles and Hailey. They will play in the lad’s room, or the living room while we have school)
Snack time!
Outside play
Lunch
Story time
Nap for little ones
School time (for big ones)
Nap for big ones.
Snack time!!

That’s it in a nut shell, and I know I’ll have to tweak it somewhat, and there will be days, especially once the baby comes, that I know things won’t get done as well. Still I think that having that structure will help the kids. They will know what to expect and know what is expected out of them. It’ll be good once we get there. The transition where they learn to be content may be rough. For example the little ones and learning to enjoy “room time” while I work with the older kids on school. They may not appreciate being kept in a room, and I anticipate two unhappy faces peering over the gate for awhile. But eventually, I know they’ll come to enjoy it and even look forward to playing without the intervention of their older siblings. ;-)

There you go. Hope it wasn’t too big of a let down for all the time I spent hyping it up. It IS going to be work for me, but I know we’ll all be better off in the long run. I know that for me personally I absolutely MUST have the discipline to get up earlier, have a little me and God and coffee time in the morning, and then start the day out right and on the right foot! I honestly believe that some of the behavior problems I keep running into with the lads will pretty much vanish when they have better structure to their days. Of course structure isn’t a “cure” for all issues, and loving discipline will have to still reign. I plan to have, and use, the time-out chair for the kids I’ll be watching, and of course the boys will also have time out, in their room, if they need it. I anticipate fewer problems and more fun on a regular routine though. :-) I’ll be sure to keep you posted and let you know my successes and failures along the way I’m sure!

Toodles, for now weary reader! :-)

So I came across this article about becoming a family of five, and just had to post it. Actually, I wanted to be able to go back and read it again, and since I’m deprived of my personal computer right now this worse for bookmarking it! Sorry my picture blog hasn’t made it up here yet, but I’m useing the iPad to do web stuff, and it’s really not easy for me to one finger type, so blogging gets put on hold for the time being.

Anyway, I thought the article was good. So if you are a fam with 3 (or more) kids or will be, like me, you might enjoy that short article. Ta ta for now friends!

This weekend was a break through for my little Myles. We’ve had a hard time with him and his “stranger danger” anxiety the past 6 months. We tried several times to get him to go with Qade to children’s church with more or less success. Usually less. I don’t think he ever made it through a whole service without a hysterical meltdown. The pastor’s wife is very good and worked with Qade a lot when we were first taking him there, but even she couldn’t get Myles calmed down.

Sunday though sang a different tune this time around! I rushed in with Qade to go potty as soon as we got to church and Stu got Myles out of the car. While he was unbuckling him and walking in, he was really talking up Sunday School to Myles and asking him if he would like to go with Qade. Myles answered with his always enthusiastic “Uh-Huh!” and that was that! I came out of the bathroom with Qade and Daddy said, “Follow Qade.” and to my utter amazement he walked right into the Sunday School room and sat at the table with Qade and the other kids!! I told the workers that I wasn’t sure how long he would last and to get us if they needed to. Imagine my surprise when I never once heard a shriek or scream come from that room the whole service! Not only that, but the ladies told Stuart that he had been just great the whole time when we picked them up!! Awwww!! It’s a victory, but bittersweet of course. Even though I want to be able to sit through services with Stuart, it was still a sweet thing to want to be wanted by my lil guy and get to comfort and hold him.

He has really started strutting his independence though. To the point where he now believes it’s unnecessary to hold my hand in parking lots and such. He likes to march on ahead swinging his arms all around. That gets nipped right away though, because parking lots and roads are NOT a place for independent thinking little 20 month olds! Still it’s obvious that he considers himself a big boy and is happy to try his best to keep up with the other kids around camp.

Stu and I were talking this weekend about how big he seems, and how he’s not our baby any more. :-( Happens SO fast! He’s still our littlest buddy and even though he is flexing his “independence muscles” a bit more these days, most of the time he’s rather compliant and very sweet.

I did a “photo walk through” of camp today when we took our walk so I’ll be posting some pics soon of where we are. ;-) It’s a pretty place, full of fun stuff like DIRT for the lads to enjoy! Have a great Tuesday! Ta-ta!

Whew! It’s a roller coaster ride for sure! Then I knew it would be. We’re having a great time at camp! My WHOLE family was up here last week with the teens from their church. Actually one bro is here as cook. The rest came up with their teens and that was fun! I got several good foot rubs from my kind-hearted brother who took pity on my poor pathetic, and very dirty I might add, feet. :-) Happy feet!! Ahhhh! Well, we hauled our grill up here to camp so we “grilled out” each night with the fam and that was lots of fun! Nothing against most of the camp food, it’s been great! It’s just difficult for me to get the lads to meals/fed/feed myself, and get out in the allotted time, so it’s easier doing meals at our cabin. Plus it’s nice to have a certain measure of control over what we’re eating.

Apparently though, our good cooking sparked some interest in some unexpected ways. Friday night was a doozy for Stuart! He had final scoring which is always very exciting. Then he stayed up till sometime around 3 AM helping the AV guy get the camp DVD ready for the campers to take home. Whew! He got back and promptly fell asleep, but then my brain started going on photography related things and I couldn’t go back to sleep. Just about the time my eyes were really and truely closing, I heard a familar bumping sound. I just couldn’t believe that the lads were up and about at 4 in the morning! Arg! So I got out of bed, in a not so happy mood, and turned on the light, stuck my head in their room and hissed, “Go back to bed!!” But as soon as I had, I realized that they were both snoozing soundly away in their proper places. Hmmm? Strange! Oh well, I got back in bed thinking maybe one of them had kicked the wall in their sleep. A few moments later I hear more of the same banging. Only this time I was awake enough to realize that it was coming from the other side of the cabin wall…. OUTSIDE!! Now there’s this deck/ledge that goes along that side of our cabin, and on this ledge is our trash. We like to keep stinky things outside like diapers and such. Some of the leftovers from the week had also made their way into that trashcan. Suddenly I knew the truth without even looking, but just to make sure, I looked. There, right outside our window was a black bear happily helping himself to our trash!!! Like any sleep deprived, mommy of little children, my first reaction was to freak out! Poor Stuart, who was even more sleep deprived, was rudely awakened by a hyperventilating wife telling him that there was a bear out there! So much for my therorys that the noisy campers and stinky diapers would be a deterant for the critter. He had been spotted near here the weekend before. Anyway, Stu got up and made some noise out the door, and the bear kind of grabbed the tree next to the cabin as if he were ready to climb. It was then that I realized he was still a pretty young bear, though not a cub. Still…. But he was very happy about our trash and wouldn’t leave until Stuart went out and flashed a light at him. Then Stu and 2 other guys kind of “hearded” him off the camp site. My poor exhausted hubby came back to get some much needed rest only to have that determined critter come straight back to our yummy can! This time however it was empty because Stuart had taken the trash up to the camp trash trailer. I nearly laughed out loud when I looked out the window this time! The bear was sitting on the ground staring into the empty can that he had knocked over! I can almost see the thoughts passing through his little bear brain, “I was sure this was the can I was at before!” ha ha ha!! Stuart had to shoo him off again, and by that point sleep was an illusion that we could only dream about till the next night.

Still, I had been wanting to see a bear…. I think I’ll rethink my “wants” the next time though. I don’t really like the idea of those wild critters roaming around my “home” and especially where my kids play. Though he was easily chased off, you can’t be too careful with wild animals. So I will keep my “momma bear” eyes open and alert while my little monkeys are playing outside, and we will NOT be keeping any more ‘yummy’ trash at our place! Oh no!

So some of you may know that I tend to have “issues” with my hip and back. Pregnancy does NOTHING to help those issues let me tell you!! This time around is no exception, in fact it seemed quite a bit worse for a couple weeks in there. I was beginning to wonder if I would be walking at all for the second half of my pregnancy. BUT I am happy to report that recently it has been MUCH much better!! I haven’t been moving less, in fact I’ve been doing a lot more walking, and maybe that’s actually helped. I tend to think, though, that some of y’all must be praying for me! So if that’s you, THANKS!!! :-) I like to be able to move and sit and stuff. ;-)

On other pregnancy related topics, swelling has begun. *sigh* It’s not too bad (yet) and I’m trying to counteract it with lots of H2O and some “feet up” time. I noticed it on Saturday when we were driving to the airport. It was quite a long stretch in the car, and then it was getting REALLY hot. Heat, I’ve found, does not help the swelling situation. But I’m hopeful that our time in the cooler mountains, though it’s been hotter up here than I ever recall as well, will help keep the swelling under control and then when I get home I’m going to get a kiddy pool for the lads and sit in it with ice chunks all day! ;-) Okay, maybe not ice chunks. Anyway, when I had Qade I experienced bad swelling. My ankles just completely disappeared for a few months. I remember the day I looked down and actually saw my ankle bone several weeks after Qade was born! I was soooo happy to see my ankles back, ha ha ha! That’s one of those funny rather random moments in time that just stick out for some reason. I would be thrilled to NOT have a repeat experience of that though, which is why I’ve got my feet up and am sipping water right now.

I am now 25 (and a half!) weeks along, and I have gained *gulp* 25 lbs. For those of you who hate math, that’s an average of a pound a week!!! My “only gaining 30lbs bubble” was burst rather quickly. However, I am still doing my best to keep active, and try not to indulge TOO much. ;-) My new “goal” is not to gain over 40, but we all know how that last trimester goes. *sigh* Still, here’s hoping. :-) I’m not worried about the weight coming off. I know it will, it’s just a matter of how soon. ;-) Ha ha ha!! I’m already dreaming of the day I can wear “skinny” clothes again.

Another pregnancy “perk” that I sometimes get are leg cramps!! OWIE!! I’ve had several “near misses” recently, but this morning I caught a doozy full on. Wow! That is one way to insure you actually wake up!! Most of the cramps I’ve had are right behind my knee or in the arch of my foot. This one though was all along the side of my calf. Weirdest thing ever! Very painful too! Not really sure why pregnancy makes you more susceptible to those, but it’s not fun. I’m hoping that the extra water I’m trying to drink will help with that as well. Ah the things we endure for the joy of being mommy to one more little one!! Wouldn’t trade it for anything!! Not for being a perfect size 6, or for having amazing skin, or not having constant pressure on my hip. It’s all totally worth it! Even jumping out of bed with leg cramps! ;-)

Anyway, that’s what’s up in my own little prego world. Camp is moving right along. The guys are practice, practice, practicing for fun time tonight. I’m debating about letting the boys “stay up” to see it. More for me than them of course, they don’t get it, but I think that they would enjoy it. I’ll just have to test the waters with how their attitudes are holding up this evening. Hope you’re having a great week, and staying cool somehow! Toodles!

Mopping, Mildew and Milestones

2010
06.07

Okay, so it has been a busy week. Not as busy for me as for some, but still “more busier” than usual. :-) The fun part about being a camp Mommy is that you can always use your kids as an excuse to go take a nap!! Ha ha ha!! Just kidding! (sorta) Anyway, I am learning as I said that I can’t be as involved as I once was or even as I’d like right now. But I have two very good reasons to limit my involvement and another on the way! We’re having fun at camp!

This weekend however we’ve been home. We had planned to come home anyway because our animals need to be attended to and we’d like to go to our church on Sundays anyway. This weekend turned out to be a little different than we expected though. We had a couple at camp who’d been helping out during staff training and needed to fly out on Saturday. So we took them to ABQ and had an impromptu lunch with my family. That was fun! Then we headed home that afternoon. So it was good that we were able to help out that way, but it cut our time at camp short and we didn’t get to tie up some ends. I hate to leave stuff to other people… feel like I’m slacking or something. Oh well….

I expected a house of horrors when we got home because our friend who’s feeding the cat and dog (here’s hoping he’s still our friend by the time camp is done!) called Stu and told him that the cat had puked a couple times and had freely used the bathtub as his own personal litter box. BUT I was pleasantly surprised because, bless his heart, he had pretty much cleaned it all up already!!! My little heart was very grateful for that! So I had some mild cleaning/bleaching/vacuuming to do, but nothing too intensive or disgusting. Yay!! Next time we leave I will make sure I TRIPLE check the bathroom door so that retarded cat can’t get in there. He has serious issues, no joke!

But I have been trying to do a bit to the house while we’ve been here. I did finally scrub out our shower. I’d been putting that off. You know that it never gets better the longer you put it off. We had one of those automatic shower cleaners in there, but had run out of cleaning solution and I just kept forgetting to replace it. So…. I had some scrubbing to do myself. Well, me and the scrubbing bubbles! But in the end the shower was clean and sparkling and I thoroughly enjoyed it for my “spa night.” I’m always in such a hurry in the mornings that getting ready has become a very quick thing. So I don’t always take time for the maintenance that I so desperately NEED these days. But I did the other night and it felt great! Deep condition treated my hair. Took time to actually USE a pumice stone on my really icky feet as well as a foot scrub! That was also amazing, especially after Stu gave me a good foot rub with some awesome foot balm. So I’m working on putting a little more ME TIME into my routine, because I don’t want to look like a frump mom. *sigh* I’m looking into getting a “steam setter” for my hair so I can do curly more easily. If you’ve had any experience w/ those and have tips, tricks or secrets to tell, please do before I invest! The reason I’m looking at them now is because “supposedly” the steam is better for your hair than say, hot rollers, or a curling iron. And they “say” the curl actually lasts longer too! I’m just looking for something new. Stuart likes my hair long, and of course, he’s the only person who’s opinion REALLY matters to me, but I do need a change now and then. So it’s a color or a trim or some curl, I dunno… something. ;-)

Hmmm… well I covered the Mildew… let’s see, oh yes. I mopped today too while the lad’s were sleeping. Yay me!!

The milestone is I’m sure what y’all were wondering about. Well, if you follow my strange, off the wall, and random Facebook status messages you’ll know already that we had a “break through” moment with Qade’s potty training on Sunday. He just out of the blue, no prompting whatsoever told me, “I want to go poop on the potty.” This declaration disturbed me somewhat because generally if he says ANYTHING potty related, it means it’s too late. Plus I was doing our camp laundry and hadn’t had any unders to put on him that day so while he WAS wearing shorts, he was still commando. So I was nervous about what would happen when he actually stood up, and slightly surprised when nothing came rolling out. Sorry… but I’m a mom, and most of you are too, so you can handle the messy truth! :-) Anyway, he got on the pot and did his thing. SCORE!!! I was thrilled beyond belief! It happened a second time that day as well!! Ahhhh!! So happy! Today, however, has been a different story and we have sailed through 3 pairs of unders getting wet before I finally decided that he would run around naked since he seems less inclined to have those accidents when there’s nothing to catch them. Oh well…. two steps forward one back. *double sigh*

BUT Qade is not our only little monkey having some milestones. Today as I sat in the bathroom after nap time coaching Qade I heard the distinct rumble of Myle’s little feet on the floor. Stu had just got back from town so I assumed he had snagged the lad out of his crib because that’s where I had left him blinking as he tried to wake up for real. Then Stuart’s voice floated in, “Did you get Myles up?” Uh… no! That little rascal had managed for the FIRST TIME to climb out of his bed!!! WOW! Stu and I had just been talking THIS MORNING about when we’d break out Myle’s “big boy bed.” Guess it will be sooner rather than later. Stu went and put Myles back in his crib and sat in the room trying to see if he’d do it again, but when I walked in Myles was standing there saying “help” ha ha! Guess he wasn’t as willing to do it with an audience. *sniff sniff* My littlest buddy is getting all big and grown up. No body asked me if that was okay! ;-)

So that pretty much brigs us up to now. Baby girl (who does have a name first AND middle now, but will still remain anonymous until her debut) has been doing well, and is getting pretty strong. Today I was watching my belly actually move and jump with all her antics! I really want for Qade to feel her move, but don’t know if he has the patience to sit w/ his hand on my tummy waiting for her to move. So I’ll have to time it just right, but that’ll be an interesting moment. :-) Qade does talk to everyone about his “baby sisser” so even though I’m not sure how much is sinking in, there are at least some things that he sorta gets. :-)
