New Years Resolved!

2009
12.31

2010, Bring it on! :-) This year I have some pretty lofty goals I will say, but I have a whole 12 months, 52 weeks, and 365 days to get it all done. :-) Sounds pretty doable if I can stay focused! Of course I really should delete about 2 or 3 of those months due to camp… Hmmmm…. but it’s still doable, very much so, and I am determined to do it!
PERSONAL GOALS:
I’ve noticed that a lot of my personal goals for this year have to do with discipline. Isn’t it odd that as children we are disciplined by our parents and authorities, and then we become adults and have to discipline ourselves? I think it was easier being on the kid end personally. :-)
INSANITY!!! This is part of my personal “get into shape” goals. Of course I seriously believe there is a possibility that it’ll kill me in the process, but I suppose finally getting in shape will be worth the risk. This is THE most intense workout regimen I have EVER attempted, so here’s hoping that I will have the discipline to stick to this goal and see amazing results in 60 days! :-)
Consistant Bible reading is one of my personal goals for this year. I hate to have to confess it, but I do struggle with consistency in this area. I have a “One Year Bible” and hope to use that to jump start my Bible reading/study. I know that it’s just a lack of discipline on my part. I can’t lay the blame on my kids or being busy, it’s a matter of making it a priority.
Improved photography. This year I will be participating in a flickr project 365 group. Basically what that means is I will take at least one photo a day for a year, edit and upload it to the group site. I can get constructive feedback and comments on my photos from others in the group. Merely cultivating the discipline to make myself take, AND edit a photo a day will improve my photography skills. I don’t technically HAVE to edit the photos, and maybe occasionally I won’t, but I want to make that a big part of this challenge for me. I have some awesome software that can do some pretty spiffy things, but honestly I don’t’ know how to use it yet… so, practice makes perfect. :-) I’m pretty excited about this project and you can follow my progression on my photo blog which is project365.raznoggle.com. I’ll post a link in the side bar too, so you can see what’s going on in photo-land along the way.
Fiddle. Speaking of practice, another of my goals is to improve on the fiddle. :-) Stuart bought me the second “American Fiddle Method” book for Christmas. I have played through the first one already, but haven’t really “practiced” all the skills. SO I need to work back through the first book before I tackle the second, but I’m excited about doing that. Perhaps someday in the future I can entertain the campers with my fiddlin’ tunes. :-)
FAMILY GOALS:
So what will 2010 look like in our family??? Can’t answer that question exactly, but I have some ideas of what I’d like. :-D Qade will be turning 3 this spring, and I have some goals for him this year. One is that he will get potty trained. :-) You remember we have been on a sabbatical from that process, and he has shown NO interest in going in the potty at all. He doesn’t ask about it, talk about it, or even seem to remember it. Ha! Poor lad, all the trauma he has to endure. BUT we will be revisiting that life lesson in March. He’ll be nearly 3 then, and ready or not, he’s got to learn someday! :-) In my perfect little world, which exists only in my head, he will be potty trained (at least day time dry) by the time we have to go to camp in May….. time will tell. ;-) Another thing that Qade and I are going to work on this year is his alphabet. He already does recognize some of the letters, but I’d like for him to have the whole thing down this year. Then of course, we have the ongoing character building day by day with our guinea-pig toddler. Stinks to be first, right? :-) But I would like for Qade to learn to consistently use his words, rather than screams to communicate and to speak respectfully to adults. Big order for a 2/3 yr old? Nah, I’m confident that he can learn these lessons well because he is a very sweet boy under that “terrible two’s” exterior. ;-)
For my littlest lad, Myles, I also have some goals. He IS young, but I’ve been reminded that he understands a LOT more than I give him credit for. The other day I asked him to get his cup and bring it to me, not actually expecting him to do it, but he surprised me by following those instructions! SO now that I know he is able, he’s going to be getting more instructions. He will be responsible to help clean up, especially since he is so fond of making HUGE messes. Also, one BIG lesson that he needs to conquer this year is that when Mommy says “no-no” it doesn’t mean “keep doing it until Mom actually moves toward you, then run like the wind the other way.” :-) Ha! I’m also planning to introduce Myles to the potty this year. We won’t begin “officially” training, but once big bro gets it down then I’m going to “allow” Myles to sit on the pot from time to time as well, so it’s not a brand new concept when it’s time to train him.
PROJECT GOALS:
Okay, I hate to admit this, but I do NOT have a scrapbook for Myles yet, and the one I have for Qade hasn’t moved beyond his first month. Oh and our wedding album is STILL not done. *sigh* So, this year is project finishing year. :-) Or more like project catch up year. I’m not sure if you can EVER be done with a scrapbook! This too will take a lot of discipline. It shouldn’t be that hard, but I’ve made such a mental block out if it that it’s difficult to even get started. I have some “blue prints” of how I’m going to manage floating around in my head so hopefully I can get some of those worked out. Now that my “craft space” is cleaned up and organized, I think it will be much easier to get in there and work through some of those things. I also have a couple unfinished crochet projects that I can work on as well. That back room is ch-ch-chilly during the winter months, but I can bring the crochet out to the warm part of the house. :-)

Anyway, those are some of my new-year’s goals. I’m sure I’m missing something, or maybe several somethings, but that gives me a pretty good base, don’t ya think? If you have made it through this post KUDOS to you!! It’s HUGE, and all about me, but lest you think I’m totally narcissistic I’m putting all of this out here as an accountability of sorts. It’s great for me to have ideas in my head, but if I don’t tell people about them, I’m much less likely to work on disciplining myself. So thanks, friends, and here’s to a great 2010!!!

Another Day

2009
12.30

So today Stuart and Myles feel under the weather. At least Myles doesn’t seem to have the cough that Stu is dealing with, but he has had a temp, and been altogether not his chipper little self. I’m enjoying more snuggles consequently, though, so that is a silver lining for sure. I thought I’d do a post to update you on the boys a little bit. I haven’t really done as well posting Myles’ little accomplishments. He is walking, and running, everywhere now. He and Qade get the biggest kicks out of chasing each other around the house. It’s all fun and games till one of them crashes or just decides he doesn’t feel like doing it any longer… then Mommy usually has to intervene. :-) Myles has 12 teeth! He still has his big wide smile and gaps between his teefers that make him look so cute!! I’m not looking forward to our next teething session because that was the WORST one with Qade, but perhaps Myles will surprise us. He certainly has before. As far as communication goes, Myles is verbal! I’ve been trying to teach him signs, because that helped A LOT with our first little lad, but Myles isn’t really going for it. However, he does talk… so I guess it all works out. He said “Ah-done” and “up” (only it’s more like “uh-PPPPPPPP” with a little spit involved, ha!) and he says “bye-bye.” He got a little helicopter from his Auntie, and when it’s done playing it will say “Bye-bye” and Myles will answer it. Very cute! The other morning as I was feeding him his oatmeal, Stu came out and kissed his head and said, “Good morning!” Myles replied with a “ga-monin” I was in shock! :-) Myles also says “Ball” which is one of his very favorite play things. He also will say please when prompted, so he’s coming along in his language skills. Oh, I almost forgot, Myles likes to say “ta-da!” too. That is totally cute! He has a bit of an ornery streak in him when it comes to pestering his big brother. He certainly knows what buttons to push. I will occasionally hear a very irritate shriek followed by 4 running feet as Myles has “stolen” one of his brother’s precious cars and is running for his life with a rather hysterical Qade on his heels. :-) We’re learning lessons about playing nicely, and sharing, and being kind, but well…. it’s slow going. And sometimes Mommy just has to laugh at the looks on BOTH of their faces. :-) I know, bad me!
Qade is growing leaps and bounds in his own language skills. He is very fun to have conversations with now. Sometimes we have to remind him to use his “words” because he thinks that he can revert to “Myles-isms.” They do seem to communicate together, though I don’t think they have their own language. When he does talk like a “big-boy” he uses complete sentences and will actually talk to us about things. One thing he has recently picked up is “okay.” Sometimes when we ask him to do something he’ll say, “Okay!” He will also ask us if we are okay. That’s cute! We’ve been working on him (a lot) recently on his whining. He is making progress, but it has been hard on all of us. The “whining chair” was instituted and he really dislikes having to sit on it. Also he does much better when we remind him immediately not to whine. I get discouraged sometimes because there are days that feel like a battle from “son up to son down” ha ha ha! :-) Still that’s where Stu helps me out so much. When I’m at the point where I’d like to just go stick my head in the snow, he will continue on and work consistently with the boys. Yay for teamwork!! I knew I picked a good Daddy for my little ones, but he still amazes me! We have learned recently that Qade’s attention span is about as long as a FOX news “anchor” so in order to pass along instructions we have to help him focus. He knows that he is supposed to look at our eyes when we are talking to him, and he’ll even repeat it “Wook at Mommy’s eyes” but even while he’s saying it, he’ll be looking out the window, at his little brother, up at the ceiling or more often at the floor. So now we cup our hands around his eyes (kinda like race horse blinders) and it has helped a heap at getting him to look at our eyes and focus on what we are saying to him. I know that he is making progress and I need to stop now and then to look back. It’s like I told a friend of mine in the same boat, we’re always moving on to the NEXT project parenting-wise so sometimes it’s hard to notice the victories that we do have along the way. I love my Monkey #1 and even though we plod through some difficult days he still is such a joy to us, and he’s a sweet little boy too. :-)
Stu was noticing today just how athletic Qade has become in recent months. His balance and coordination have really improved. Sometimes I’m not sure that’s positive since it gives him even more climbing skills! For example, Start got me some magnets for Christmas that I put “up high” on the fridge because they’re chokable for Myles. Well, Qade had asked for them, and I told him they were Mommies. SO yesterday I was talking to Stuart in the office when I distinctly heard the bathroom door close. Hmmmm…. what could that Lad be up to? So when I came to check I found that he had fished his stool out of the bathroom to try and reach the magnets. Finding that inadequate, he had pushed over a box that has a little desk for him and Myles in it (yet to be assembled) and climbed up and did indeed have all 6 magnets in his paws. :-) I was actually too proud of his ingenuity to scold him for taking the magnets down. :-) I actually don’t mind if he has them when Myles is sleeping. Still, I’m gonna have to keep an eye on that dude as he is figure out things for himself.
So to end this incredibly long blog all about US I’ll just say that I hope you all have a fantastic New Years Eve and New Years Day! Watch football to your hearts desire, if you enjoy that (ugh) and eat lots of yummy things because the “resolutions” have to start the next day!!!! ;-)

Chapel of the Rocks

2009
12.29

Happy Tuesday, Friends! It’s hard to believe that in a very short time we will be watching 2009 run away and welcome 2010! I have a post I’m working on with my “resolves” for the new year. I like to share some of those because it helps me to feel more accountable knowing that YOU (whomever you may be) know about it. :-) Hopefully it will provide the motivation I desperately need to follow through.
BUT I still have a couple of days to be lazy, as much as a house and 2 kids will allow, so I’m taking FULL advantage of that! Sipping coffee till 10am, wearing my cozy slippers, and letting the boys spread their toys all over the house. :-D I am, however, still doing dishes and laundry because I know that if I let those slip I’ll be playing “catch up” well into the new year. ;-)
SO the other week we got to spend a few nights at a resort in Sedona. It’s an interesting story actually… one of my Facebook friends contacted me because her parents had some vacation points that they used to reserve this resort. However something happened and the friends who WERE going to use it were unable to. So they were looking for someone to use the reservation so it wouldn’t be wasted. Well, who wouldn’t jump at a chance like that? ;-) Besides Sedona is some amazingly beautiful rock country. So me and my ever-looking-for-a-good-photo-op, mind were very excited to go. We had a great time! One evening Stu and I visited the Chapel of the Rocks. It’s an amazing building looking like it’s just sprung out of the red rocks!! We came across it right at sundown, so the lighting was pretty amazing to get the colors of the rocks and all. Here’s a couple of the shots we got. I also ‘chatted’ with a lady we saw there because she had around her neck a nifty black strap with yellow letters that said Nikon. :-) Instant bond right there. ;-) So we talked shop while we snagged some great shots. :-) It’s not as hard to talk to people when you have something in common.

These two were probably my favorite out of the ones we took. Stuart was using our point and shoot and I had the D300. The above was one he got, and the next one was mine. :-) I personally did the editing, but not much, they were nice right off the camera. :-)

There you go. Pretty country! We want to go back sometime when it’s a tad warmer and hike around a bit. It’s just amazing up there!
Well, hope you have a terrific Tuesday! Ta-ta!

Not MEEEEEEE

2009
12.28

Hello friends and fellow Monday Sufferers. :-) I love doing not-me-mondays because it’s such a nice break from the reality of Monday. THIS Monday, however I’m having a delicious day because Stuart and his folks took the lads over to Great-Grandparent Noggle’s home for breakfast.
So on this NOT ME Monday I did NOT sleep in till 8:30, luxuriously hogging the WHOLE bed. AAAAAHHHHHHH!
I did NOT take my time getting ready, enjoy a whole bowl of Lucky Charms without having to share a bite, and sip wonderful Santa’s White Christmas coffee. Not me.
After that comfy morning all by myself, my little mommy’s heart did NOT melt when my 14 month old saw me and came running with squeals to get a hug. I wasn’t totally enthralled in his non-stop babble as he “told” me all about his morning adventures. :-)
Previously I did NOT give both my lads chocolate covered pretzels just to get them out of the kitchen only to find schmoozed chocolate on the living room furniture.
I did NOT totally ignore the “traditional” Christmas “feast” and feed my lads spaghetti-o’s on Christmas. :-)
I also did NOT do 4 loads of laundry Christmas afternoon because we didn’t have a stitch of clean clothing left in our house. Ha ha!
I DID NOT enjoy one of the BEST Christmases ever watching my little lads experience the joys of giving, and especially receiving (ha ha) gifts!
Hope you all have NOT been up to lots of fun thing too!
You can read more “not-me’s” at McMamma’s site too.

I Heart Faces (out-takes week)

2009
12.28

I’m entering some photos that I personally think are funny to the I ? Faces challenge this week. “Out takes” to me are when something unexpected happens while taking photos and end up making them funny. :-) So without further ado… the pics. Oh, and I’m allowed to enter 5 this time around. Let me know which one YOU think is funniest. ;-)

This one is of my brother being a goof when we were testing out the flash for a family photo. :-)

Next is Qade tripping over his Daddy’s legs. I happened to have the camera in my hand, and pressed the shutter, but wasn’t looking through the viewfinder, so this was just one of those fun lucky shots.
DSC_7365 (1)

My personal favorite as far as out takes go. I laugh every time I see this photo, but I realize that maybe it’s something only a Mommy can find funny. :-) I was trying to get a big bro/little bro photo and Myles chose just that moment to burble. Once again I wasn’t looking through the view finder, just shooting. Come on… you KNOW it’s funny!
DSC_8093 (1)

Here’s a classic example of too many kids in one shot. I took about 15 shots of this pose with the grandparents and all the grandboys, but only one was “decent.” In the rest one or other child was screaming his lungs out. Pretty funny.

This photo, I took at camp this summer during a rousing game of Powerball. Apparently no one yelled “duck” to our ‘goal holder.’ Ha ha.. just another lucky capture. Poor Matt. :-)

As Qade would say. :-)
We’ve had a BLAST this week!! Once we finally made it “over the interstate and through the traffic” to the fam’s houses we had a great time! Qade simply revels in the attention he gets from his grandparents and Oma. I love to watch him having fun with them. He cried when we left and wanted to “go back, gam-pa’s house!” That’s just because he didn’t know what was in store for him at OUR home! :-) Yes, we are the odd ones who prefer to have our Christmas at home. We LOVE seeing family AROUND Christmas time, but prefer to have our actual Christmas at home with just us…. okay, we’re strange.
So as our “tradition” dictates we get to open something on Christmas Eve. Well, this year Stu said that we should open our stockings SO we did. :-) Since we don’t ‘do’ Santa in our home it’s no biggie, and the boys loved getting their stocking goodies! They both got sunglasses, hoping that it will cut down on the “sun in ma eyes” screams that we get in the vehicle. Who knows though, Myles wouldn’t keep his on for longer than 10 seconds at a time and then scream for help to get them back on. Ha! They both thought they were pretty cool, and I’d have to agree!
Qade got “Cars” glasses, of course, and you can clearly see the McQueen and Mator. Very fun!! Myles glasses are uh… hot wheels I think. I’m not sure, but they don’t have any character on the front so who knows…. they did get schmoozed pretty fast, however. :-)
I got a movie in MY stocking so after the lads went to bed (early, yay!) Stu and I got to snuggle on the couch and watch it. :-) I don’t know who decided that if a baby goes to bed 1/2 hr early that it equals to waking up 3 hours early, but I believe it’s a BAD practice! No, it wasn’t so bad, but at around 4am I heard some squalls coming from the lad’s room and went to comfort Myles. By then he had roused his big bro, but fortunately Qade didn’t get up. I calmed Myles down, told Qade to go back to sleep, and then Myles joined us upstairs because I knew leaving them both in there awake would be a complete calamity!! Then we all got a couple hours more sleep and that made for a good Christmas morning.
We ate our TRADITIONAL Christmas morning breakfast of monkey bread!!!! It turned out so licky, sticky yummy this morning! LOVE IT!! And since the boys don’t have the actual idea of Christmas down yet, they didn’t mind waiting for gifts till after breakfast.
It was SO fun this year to watch Qade figure stuff out. He took an active role in passing out gifts with a hearty, “Mewwy Cwismas” and he took an even more eager interest in opening his own gifts. It has finally clicked to him that when ya tear the pretty paper off, there is something really fun on the inside! :-) Myles is still much more interested in playing with the packaging and paper than the gifts but there were a few that sparked his interest.
We are determined to teach our children thankfulness, in as much as WE can. We want to teach by example, and also by helping them learn to give. This year at my family’s house we had Qade pass out the gifts we brought and tell each person Merry Christmas, by name. Then when visiting Stuart’s grandmother in an assisted living home, we encouraged Qade to shake hands with the residents and tell them Merry Christmas as well. He was so good about it! Sometimes going there makes the boys nervous, but this time they were both showing off for the amusement of the older folks. It made my heart glad to see the smiles that our boys were able to get from the people there. Next year, since the lads will both be old enough to participate, we will make “goodies” for them and have a great adventure “giving” day. Our little ones are very privileged to have so many caring people who want to give them good things. They have fantastic grandparents on both sides, and of course, WE even have a hard time restraining our ‘gifting’ when we see something we just KNOW they’d love! :-) But more important than them getting all the things their little hearts could wish for, we want them to be thankful and ENJOY what they already have, and appreciate new things they get, rather than think that it’s just their due. We also want to help them learn the joy of giving. That is a treasure that can’t be taken away.
SO anyway, I hope that you have all had a very very fun and happy Christmas! Hope that “santa” whomever that is for you, was generous to you this year, and that you thought a lot about what it meant for “Baby Jesus” (as Qade calls Him) to be born for us. Merry Christmas!

AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHH!!! (not me)

2009
12.21

I did not spend the majority of Monday morning stressing out about packing up my kids, their luggage, and all the other necessities that are needed by the four of us for a trip to spend time with my family before Christmas. Does it ever amaze you how much JUNK little people need to spend a night away???
We did not get down the road with our 2 monkeys and their baggage in tow only to see a sign that informed us of a road closure. Neither did the thought occur to us that we should then stop to get details or find an alternate route. Surely it wouldn’t mess up OUR travel plans, oh no.
We didn’t blindly continue on only to spend over an hour SITTING on the road just to get to the “top” to be told to turn around and take a detour. *sigh*
After that we didn’t dig out the map to create our own detour, and happily jaunt along our way till we saw a 4×4 truck covered in mud coming from the opposite direction. The driver of that truck was kind enough to tell us “ya can’t get there from here.” **double sigh**
After spending 5 hours on the road with our poor little children strapped to their carseats the whole time, we DID NOT arrived back where we started…. yep, home. *sigh again*
Looking for the “silver lining” in my “not me monday” as a friend of mine recently encouraged me to do, I will get to play with my new photo editing software!! I will break out the iron and make some rosettes to munch on this evening while we sit down, cozy and happy in our own home with our beautiful Christmas tree, and my awesome lads bouncing off the walls. :-) I’m disappointed not to get to have a fabulous spaghetti dinner, made by Oma, with all the fam tonight, but I am thankful that we’re happy and safe and it’s still Christmas time!

In Our Realm

2009
12.15

Qade the little entertainer hasn’t been disappointing lately. He and his Daddy have this “fist bump” they do where Stuart will tell Qade to “hit the rock” and then Qade bumps his fist. Well, one day Qade put out his little fist and said, “Hit the little rock, Daddy” Ha!! Who knew he even had the size concept down?? :-) He’s a fun, funny kid. The other night at dinner, out of the blue, he said, “My chill pill.” He then pretended to pick up a “pill” from his place mat and eat it! I was rolling with that one! We occasionally tell him to “take a chill pill” when he is having issues. He saw my vitamin by my plate and assumed it was my chill pill and he needed one too. :-) I gave him a flintstone kid vitamin with dinner last night and he told me it was his vitamin chill pill. It’s amazing to me what our child will come up with. I know I don’t give him enough credit.
Stuart and I were recently organizing our sheet music and books. Qade sat happily on the floor examining one book after the other and telling me each time he picked one up, “This book is my favorite!” Now he’ll pick a random person he knows like Uncle James and pick a book out of his collection and say, “This is Uncle James’ favorite book.” Silliness!
Myles is our sneaky lad. He is learning what is off limits in our house to him, but that won’t stop him from touching now and then, just to check if it’s still a “no-no.” Usually all I do is say his name and he goes running (yes, he’s getting quite fast on his little feet) in the opposite direction. He’ll adopt this “I wasn’t touching it, oh no” look on his face as well. Hmmmmm…. :-) Myles walks everywhere now. He rarely crawls at all, and is surprisingly sturdy. He will hang on to Qade’s shirt and walk around with him, just to be annoying. :-) Qade squeals about it the whole time which is probably why Myles gets a kick out of doing it. ;-) Typical little brother. He IS indeed learning how to push Qade’s buttons and thinks he’s quite something when he gets a reaction. Ah, little people… they remind me so much of myself it’s terrible. ;-) Ha ha!
Myles is going through that phase that Qade also went through where it’s the most fun thing ever to empty drawers. I remember this with Qade, but you see then it was only one against one. NOW however, Qade thinks it’s great fun to join Myles and since he can reach the higher drawers EVERYTHING ends up on the floor. Imagine what a happy camper I was when I went to their room one day to find the entire contents of their dresser strewn about as well as 2 under-the-bed rubbermades that had “organized” clothes in it. Oh, and every book was off the book case too. :-) Yep, happy day. I’ve started to learn though, and Qade and Myles both get to help put things back. Qade doesn’t enjoy it, so hopefully it’ll act as a deterrent from destroying things in the first place. Though I have a feeling that when that little brother begins to have such a blast being a destruct-o-matic that he won’t be able to resist. :-)
It’s always an adventure. We’ve been 2 days on our “potty sabbatical” and doing great! Qade doesn’t seem to care a bit, and I’d rather change diapers than deal with the constant battle at this point. :-) The holidays will certainly be “happier” for this mommy!
