Happy Monday

Today campers arrive for our second teen week at camp.  The work week went well, and a lot was accomplished, but I think we’re all ready to have campers again.  Last night me and some helpers got the store/snackshop ready to run.  I have to say that I’ve been sadly disappointed with the company that we ordered stuff from for our store.  In the first place, NONE of it was here on time.  Once it did start arriving, after camp had already started, the orders were printed wrong, and so were unusable!  We finally got the imprinted waterbottles and will be selling those this week, but still no sign of the latte mugs that I was so excited about, and the sweatshirts were wrong and haven’t been replaced yet.  It’s been a disaster!!  I suppose it’s a learning experience, but the main thing that I have learned is to NEVER order from this company again!

Qade is bound to have fun this week.  His grandparents are coming up with their teen group as sponsors.  His Uncle James and Aunt Joy will be here too.  Let the spoiling commence!!  I happen to know that they are bringing black “Aussie” licorice and some vianna sausages just because Qade likes them.  Maybe if I’m a good mommy Qade will share some licorice with me! :-)

Tomorrow I have to take Qade to town to get his shot.  It’s the MMR and I’m dreading this one.  I’ve read enough and been reasured by the nurses (Qade’s doc doesn’t cout, she was so rude aobut it when I asked her questions that I’m going to change his doctor!!) that this immunization is safe, but it still bothers me for some reason.  Besides that I’m sure it’s going to make Bubba unhappy for a couple days, and I hate to do that during camp, but this is really the last chance I’ll have before we head to Canada, and Stuart would like it done.  So, pray for me and Bubba tomorrow.  Maybe having the grandparents here will help counter the ill effects of the shot. :-)

Y’all enjoy your week!

Health Care

2008
06.20

I know there are issues in our country’s health care system.  I know that doctors make mistakes (they are human too).  I know that lots of stuff goes wrong, but I have to say that I’m so thankful to live in the USA and have the options for the care that we can get.  I was reading this article on the foxnews site, and it just made me realize that people all over the world suffer through things that we will never have to know.  So even though I complain about doctors and their attitudes sometimes, deep down I’m very thankful that they’re out there and available.  So here’s the article.  It’s not long.  I’m sure the family is happy about the outcome despite the wrong diagnosis!

A baby girl born in Mumbai, India, on Monday was diagnosed stillborn but astonished her family by gurgling as they took her to the cemetery the next day, BBC News reported.

Hospital authorities ordered an inquiry to determine if the medical staff acted negligently in its diagnosis.

The baby girl was delivered during a complicated labor at seven months gestation, the report said.

The child’s 30-year-old mother suffered life-threatening convulsions and high blood pressure over the weekend and was prescribed “powerful medicines” for the conditions. She later delivered the baby, who was “limp” at birth, prompting hospital staff to declare her stillborn.

The baby’s condition is believed to have resulted from the medications taken by the mother and she likely awoke once the medicine wore off, Suleiman Merchant, acting dean of Sion Hospital, where the child was delivered, told BBC.

Well, yesterday was a success as far as I’m concerned.:-)  I know the ultrasound is for checking certain things on the baby and making sure everything is ship shape, but in my mind it was only worth while if we could find out “what it is.”  ha ha!  So we did.  I was watching the monitor and “noticed” before the doctor even said anything, sure enough it’s a little buddy boy!  I’m thrilled that Qade will have a little brother and they’ll be so close in age too!  It’s going to be oodles of fun!  The Dr. said that everything looked good and on track, so that was encouraging too.  We found out later when talking to Stu’s dad that this doctor was the one who actually delivered Stuart and his sister!!!  How funny is that?

After our appointment and some other running around we had lunch at Cracker Barrel where Qade made some friends with an older couple sitting across the aisle from us.  It’s amazing how quickly a baby can break the ice, and we had a good conversation with some folks we probably would never have talked to otherwise.  I had chicken fried chicken by the way, it was yummy!!  Qade had some chicken fingers, well, at least parts of them.  Some of the “fingers” ended up being thrown on the floor.  I was kind of humored, because they put us at a table right near where everyone comes in to the dining area.  Well, Qade being the silly kid that he is was chucking quite a bit of stuff on the floor.  At one point I saw this very grumpy looking lady who was obviously a manager or something by the way she was yelling at everyone in the kitchen, stoop to pick up a smooshed biscut that Qade had thrown.  And then she walked by another time and picked up soemthing else.  Made me chuckle inside!

When Qade whent to the doc on Monday we found out that he’s only in the 15% for weight.  It’s not a problem and the doctors haven’t been concerned, he’s in the 35% for his height, so he’d just a smaller kid at this point anyway.  However I got him some of this breakfast drink powder that I used to give the little guy I was nanny for.  He was a skinny kid too, and we just added it to his milk a few days a week to get a little extra proteen and calcium and calories.  He called it “ninna milk” because it’s vanilla flavored.  So I figured it might do Qade some good to have a few ninna milk days a week as well.  We’ll see if he likes it.  I think he probably will, cause he loves his straberry milk too!

Hope you all are having a great Lime Green Thursday!  Ta ta

Feelin’ Chipper

Yesterday I took Qade in to the Springerville clinic because it was bugging me that he’d had a temp for so long.  I figured he was just working through a virus, but it just gives me a peace of mind to know that there’s no ear infection or anything else that needs ‘help.’  Stuart hit it on the head when he said, “So you needed to take him to the doctor for YOU.”  It’s true.  We could have done without the visit, but it made me feel better anyway, and at least Stu understood, even if in his own mind he felt like it was a waste of time.:-)  At least he didn’t say it. Ha ha!

This morning Qade woke up feeling fine and froggy!  He’s been much happier and more active today.  He just got up from a great morning nap, and still feels ‘cool’ so that’s good.  This morning after breakfast I was letting him “air dry” like I do sometimes.  He had on his onesy top, but nothing under.  Turns out it was a good thing that little flap was hangin’ down there!  Ha ha!  I looked at him, not long after the diaper came off and there was a big wet spot on the front of his shirt!!  Ha ha ha!  So off it came, and since I figured it was all worked out, he could play for a while longer.  He was crawling around like crazy, and I was laughing at him because all he had on were socks, and it looked toooooo funny!  I got some pics and might just have to share one with you if I can find the cable to transfer them.  Oh, it was hilarious!

Today the guys are at the new camp property taking down some trees and doing other rough and tough physical labor.  The ladies are organizing and cleaning this campsite.  I’m supposed to be doing registration data work, but I need Stuart’s help, as this new program keeps throwing me for loops.  Hmmmm…  Oh well, there’s always tomorrow.

Speaking of tomorrow, we are going up to our house this evening to spend the night because tomorrow I have an apointment with ultrasound!!  Hopefully if we have a cooperative wee one we’ll find out what’s cookin’ in there. :-)   My mom is about crazy with anticipation, and keeps reminding me that I HAVE to call her as soon as we know.  I think she’s afraid that we’ll turn mum and keep the information secret.;-) Now, would I do a thing like that?  Of course not! Ha ha ha!  We did keep Qade’s name a secret, which I believe we’ll do with this one too, but we did let everyone know he was a him.  So stay tuned for the “big news” post that’s sure to be coming in the next day or 2 depending on time.

Toodles

Week’s End

Well, last night I was pretty much out of steam.  Good thing it was Friday.  Yesterday Qade started to feel bad and he had a fever and just seemed miserable.  So we made it an early night for him.  I tried to stay up till Stu got back, but I figured he was tied up with some of the last minute camp issues.  Eventually I took my tired brain to bed, and slept pretty well last night.  Stu and I have switched sides in the bed.  He’s now sleeping on the ‘hilly’ side, just to help me get a more comfy night’s sleep.  Isn’t he the best?!  I sure think so!  Anyway, this morning, I still had a hard time getting up and I could tell by Bubba’s voice that he was still not feeling good.  Sure enough his temp was back up and he was miserable, poor baby!  I took him to our bed, which is usually fun and games, and he just laid there and cried.  I felt so bad for him.  He and I didn’t go down to camp for breakfast, so we didn’t see the campers off, but that’s okay.  We needed some rest time.  Qade, and I, took a mid morning nap in the big bed and he woke up feeling somewhat better.  He was still fussy, but he didn’t seem as hot and after a little bit even played some. :-)   Good sign.  Stuart had to go to the new property with the guys this afternoon to do “stuff.”  I miss him.  Seems like it’s been hit and miss, more miss, as far as seeing each other this week.  Next week will be better I think.  At least we have a Dr. apt on Wednesday that we get to go to together.  I just hope poor Bubby get’s feeling better soon.  I hate it when he’s down.  Makes me feel pretty helpless.  Enjoy your weekend everyone!

More Signs

2008
06.12

Hey everyone!  Just me again here with a plug for baby signs. :-)   Qade has been doing so well with his.  He knows “please” “more” “thank-you” (this one is soooooo cute!  His “Aunt Rachael” helped him learn this and he also “says” it with the sign.  It sounds pretty convincing to me) and of course “bye-bye.”  I’m going to start on UP and DOWN with him so that he can begin to communicate what he wants.  It has been so amazing to see how it cuts down on the fits and frustration for him.  Example: today at lunch he wanted his snack cup with the goldfish in it and it was just out of reach, so he started to fuss, and I asked him to say “please” and it immediately stopped the fussing.  He just asked nicely and I helped him.  Sometimes I don’t even have to say the word, I’ll just ask him, “What do you say?” and he’ll say please.  It’s awesome!  This summer I also want to work on the words “food,” “milk” and “drink” (which we will use for juice, because the one for juice is kinda hard) and I think “mommy” and “daddy” and “baby” we will work on some as well.  He’s in a very mimicking stage right now so it’s very easy to get him to do the signs.  And like I said, it cuts down on the frustration on both ends when he can communicate what he wants/needs.

Funny time

Hi all, I had a great post all thought out in my brain earlier today, but just like Anne of Avonlea forgetting the speech she memorized for her students, I can’t remember a word of it.  So I’ll ramble for a bit to make up for it, then I’m going to bed.  I’m very very very very sleepy!  Camp is going great!  I’ve been having a good time in the General Store selling fun stuff and lots of sugar!  Yay for counselors who get to live with these kids hyped up on sugar and caffene.  Tonight was funtime and while I was a little nervous about it being pulled off, I thought the guys did a great job, and it was actually funny!  Yay for us!  The campers loved it too by the enthusiastic laughing and cheers that they participated in.

Qade is doing pretty well.  I’ve had some discipline issues with him the last couple days and that’s not fun, but I know I need to be consistent even when we’re out of “schedule” and not in our normal place.  He can have quite a temper, and we’ve got to help him nip that in the bud (butt?)  I still think for the fact that such a little guy has to adjust to a whole new place and a BUNCH of new people that he’s doing a great job!  This morning he took 2 steps by himself!!!  Daddy has been working with him, and he thinks it’s this terribly fun game.  I get the biggest kick out of watching him.  I let him run around “mecked” in the morning when I get him up so that he can “air dry.”  It helps his bottom not get too rashy.  So this mornin’ when he was trying to walk it was just too funny to watch his little hiney work to keep himself up.:-)  Ha!  Hopefully he will never see this post.  I shouldn’t talk about his little bum, but it’s just too cute not too! Ha ha ha!!  Anyway, Stu’s mom is here for a couple days and she’s going to help me watch Qade while I work in the store.  It’s usually during his nap time, but I don’t like to leave him without a responsible person.

Well, I’ve got to run.  Morning has been coming way too early, and I need to be at the snack shop to sell hot chocolate, and cappuccino during breakfast.  Toodles!

Another Sunday

Today the entire staff packed up and headed north for the 2 hour trek to Sanders.  We had some good services!  One of the staff guys preached the morning service and did a sparkling job!  Qade was banished to the back with the other munchkins for Sunday School, but he got freaked out at one of the staff guys who was back there helping.  It took 2 other staff members, Daddy, and a cracker to restore order. :-)   Ha ha!!!  He was just way too tired to deal with it, but once he got happy again, he was fine.  After service we had a lovely lunch that the camp cook and helpers prepared ahead of time!  It is soooo nice not to have to think about fixing dinner every day!  Woo-hoo for yummy camp food!  The afternoon service was really refreshing.  The staff sang their songs for camp (a good practice run) and some gave testimonies between songs.  It was a really great service and I was encouraged, so therefore it’s a success!  Ha!  Tomorrow the campers arrive, ready or not!:-O  I hope that we’re more ready than not, but we shall see.  The guys are even now engaged in funtime practice.  I’ve yet to see any of it in action, so I’m looking forward to the first performance on Wednesday.  Pray for all of us, there is a lot going on!

What are people thinking?

2008

I was reading this story on Fox News. com and just couldn’t believe what I was reading! This lady decided to have an abortion because she “couldn’t stand to lose another baby.” Does that make any sense to you?? I honestly do NOT understand how the “logic” works in people’s minds. Didn’t she know that by making that choice she was losing her baby? Miraculously the baby survived the abortion and when she found out after she got over being “mad” she decides that he deserves another chance at life. Why didn’t he deserve it to begin with? He didn’t ask to be conceived! And even if he was born with a genetic disease he STILL deserved a chance at life! Why did it take a botched abortion attempt for this lady to understand that all life is valuable no matter the difficulties or duration. Ugh! Things like this just make me mad! Anyway, here’s the article if you’d like to read it as well. I just needed a little “vent” for my own thoughts on the thing.

A mother who decided to abort her son because he may have inherited a life-threatening kidney condition is overjoyed that he survived the procedure.

Jodie Percival of Nottinghamshire, England, said she and her fiancee made the decision to abort baby Finley when she was eight weeks pregnant.

Percival’s first son Thane died of multicystic dysplastic kidneys — which causes cysts to grow on the kidneys of an unborn baby — and her second child Lewis was born with serious kidney damage and currently has just one kidney, the Daily Mail reported.

“I was on the (birth control pill) when I became pregnant,” Percival, 25, said. “Deciding to terminate at eight weeks was just utterly horrible but I couldn’t cope with the anguish of losing another baby.”

A short time after the abortion, Percival felt a fluttering in her stomach. She went to the doctor for a scan and discovered she was 19 weeks pregnant.

“I couldn’t believe it,’ Percival said. “This was the baby I thought I’d terminated. At first I was angry that this was happening to us, that the procedure had failed. I wrote to the hospital, I couldn’t believe that they had let me down like this.

“They wrote back and apologized and said it was very rare,” she added.

Dr. Manny Alvarez, managing health editor for FOXNews.com, said Percival’s situation is actually quite common.

“Women that have early terminations in weeks six, seven and eight, many times the pregnancy is so small that doctors miss removing the baby,” Alvarez said. “The danger is that the failed attempt can damage the baby. That is why these patients who get early terminations need follow-ups.”

Another scan a week later confirmed the baby also had kidney problems, but doctors told the couple the baby was likely to survive, so they decided he deserved another chance at life.

In November, Finley was born three weeks premature. He had minor kidney damage but is expected to lead a normal life.

Here is a photo of the baby.
